We are a more connected society than we have ever been in history. People even
100 years ago would be completely astonished to see technology like FaceTime,
Twitter, and TikTok, which all help keep people throughout the world as in the
know as they desire and in contact with loved ones and friends despite their
location. We can stay completely up to date with news around the world and have
the answer to nearly any question by searching for it on our personal devices.
That being said, technology can have its drawbacks. a I firmly believe technology
can derail one’s wellness if people who utilize it don’t monitor their habits and
have the ability to detach from it completely from on a regular basis. a Speaking
from personal experience, it’s easy to feel frustrated with your own situation by
living vicariously through the highlights of others’ lives on social media. a
Depression rates are up and droves of people feel isolated despite the perceived
connection opportunities that exist online.
Taking walks away from technology is a simple, yet effective wellness tool that
allows people to separate from stimulus, disconnect from global issues, and
introduce mindfulness through mellow exercise. a According to an article in Vogue
in late 2021, 53% of people have increased their daily walking distances since
2019 (Valenti, 2021). Physiological benefits include endorphin release, the combat
of osteoporosis, and exposure to sunlight, which provides Vitamin D to the body. a
Just as important is the mental clarity and self-reflection that take place during
walks without technology. When my schedule allows for it, a late afternoon or
early evening walk always is a great reset before winding down for the night.
When we look back on the Social Media Boom” we’re experiencing today, I truly
believe historians will notice the awakening people had about the harm too much
technology can cause on ones’ psyche. Those who take the conscious approach of
limiting their engagement with social media will be viewed as ahead of the curve in
understanding the importance of detaching from social media, technology, and
artificial stimulus as a whole. Walks are an easy, simple, and free way to do just
that!
