Introduction: Topic Description
When looking into the history of diversity and how it impacts individuals as well as
society it is important to understand that we are just now starting to gain a larger understanding
and knowledge of the effects of the lack of diversity, inclusion, and discrimination have had over
the years. “Human diversity refers to the variety of differences that exist among people who
compromise humanity (The human species).” (Thompson, 2012) Some of the ways that we
showcase diversity are in different aspects such as how we look, where we come from, our
cultural backgrounds, and even personal things such as our sexual orientation. There are a
multitude of ways that diversity can impact and improve your personal as well as your work life
such as, “Enhancing self-awareness, stimulating social development, deepens learning and
elevates thinking, stimulates creative thinking, enhances career preparation and career success as
well as many other numerous benefits.” (Thompson, 2009)
Throughout this paper I am going to focus my research and evidence on my topic of
Gender Inequality in the workplace. Specifically, I am going to focus on how women have been
treated unfairly throughout history while comparatively their male counterparts on average have
had many more advantages leading to large amounts of success. These differences will be
supported with outside resources as well as facts about the discrimination women have dealt with
such as things like the wage gap, discriminatory hiring practices/barriers to entry, sexual
harassment problems, lack of equal roles in leadership compared to male counterparts and many
other issues that have plagued the female workforce for a millennium. While everyone has
differences it is important to be supportive and inclusive to build the best future for society
possible! “To appreciate human diversity is to appreciate both differences and similarities.
(PSEG, 2009)
3
Describe apopulationsignificant to your topic. Include information such as demographics,
cultural practices, social identity, and key challenges.
This paper focuses on the female struggles and inequalities that they have faced in the
workplace over previous years. “Roughly four-in-ten working women say they’ve experienced
gender discrimination at work.” (Parker, Funk, 2017) This is a staggering number of women who
have faced these inequality problems and truth be told the real number is probably even higher
than reported. While women in general are the key focus it is important to note that there are
even more disparities and challenges that plague women of color/minority women as compared
to their Caucasian counterparts. “Women workers, particularly women of color, experience
multiple types of inequality in the labor force, including gender and racial wage gaps,
occupational segregation, and a disproportionate burden of cost associated with caregiving.”
(U.S. DOL, 2024)
Another key factor that is important when identifying the population of women in the
workforce is that of mothers in the workforce and the inequalities they have faced as well.
“According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics about 71% of mothers with children at home
are working.” (BLS, 2024) While this is an interesting demographic of this population being
studied it is even more interesting to not that, “Research has shown that hiring mangers are less
likely to hire mothers compared to women who don’t have kids, and when employers do make an
offer to a mother, they offer her a lower salary than they do other women.” (AAUW, 2024) What
is even more staggering is the fact that women, and mothers on top of that don’t just get pay
decreases for their gender and having children, it seems it is a common occurrence for men to get
pay raises when having children. “Researchers found that between two years before the birth of a
4
couple’s first child and a year after, the earnings gap between opposite sex spouses’ doubles.”
(US. Census Bureau, 2017) This type of occurrence has been labeled, “The motherhood penalty”.
“These mothers can be seen making 63 cents for every dollar that is paid to fathers. Even full-
time mothers make 71 cents for every dollar made by a father.” (AAUW, 2024)
Articulate how the topic has shaped thelives and experiencesof your chosen population.
Gender inequality in the workforce has greatly changed women’s lives as well as their
long-term futures. Having all these barriers and issues that limit them in comparison to men
fundamentally affects how they live their lives and experience things. Women have faced many
difficult barriers in the workplace such as the barrier to enter, fighting for their right to equal pay,
as well as fighting for equal roles in leadership compared to men in the workplace. According to
the U.S. Department of Labor Blog, “Since the new millennium, the total labor force
participation rate and the women’s labor force participation have both fallen, while the women’s
labor force peaked around 1999 with women making up 60 percent of the workforce.” (U.S.
Department of Labor, 2023)
“Gender discrimination in the workplace can have far-reaching effects on a persons
physical, psychological, and emotional health.” (Roebig, 2020) When studying gender inequality,
it is important to recognize significant factors that have played a role in this disparity occurring
over the years. I would like to argue that general misunderstanding of women along with people
who have a predisposition to view women with biases and false stereotypes play a significant
role in limiting their capacity in the workplace as well as the other issues they have struggled
with like leadership roles and pay equality. Certain stereotypes and biases affect these women
because people judge them off their irrational beliefs. One such stereotype that has hindered
5
women’s ability in the workforce to get their equal pay, promotions, and job offers in the first
place is that of being a mother. While it is not true some of their workforce counterparts believe
that these women who are moms will be less dedicated to their job as compared to men.
“Childless women are 8.2 times more likely to be recommended for a promotion than mothers.”
(Correl, Bernard, Paik, 2007) With statistics like this readily present it is clear after just a limited
amount of research that these biases and stereotypes have very negatively affected women
throughout the years which is why we must bring light to this information.
Another significant factor that should be studied in playing a role in the disparity in the
genders in the workplace is that of being disabled. As stated, “Disability is a gendered issue, with
women in the United States experiencing relatively higher rates of disability than men. Disabled
women face employment gaps in comparison to both the general population and disabled men.
Disabled women’s employment rate was record high 20.5% yet substantially lower than the
general population, at 60.3%, and that of disabled men, at 24.8%.” (Rublee, Neal, 2024) I think
while it is obvious there are certain jobs disabled women would not accel at there are numerous
jobs out their disabled people women included could do just as well as most of their nondisabled
counterparts. For example, any work from home remote job on the computer would be ideal for
people with disabilities and they could fill the role and do just as good a job as anyone else.
While making these arguments there are always potential obstacles that we face in getting
the general population to have an open and honest discussion about issues like this. One potential
obstacle that could be a challenge would be that of people not seeing this as much of an issue as
it was seen in the past. “In 2020, women earned 83 cents to every dollar men earned, according
to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.” (Standford, 2022) While this is still a very clear issue in
today’s society the hard truth is it is not talked about as much as it used to be as the gap has
6
closed but is still very prevalent today. Some people are simply ignorantly uninformed and must
be met with facts, details, and open discussion to change their mind and keep this staggering
issue on the forefront of things that must be fought and changed.
Explain your choice ofgeneral education interdisciplinary lensfor analyzing your topic.
The four lenses are history, humanities, natural and applied sciences, and social science.
For my choice of a general education interdisciplinary lens for analyzing my topic I have
chosen the history lens. My research studies gender inequality in the workplace particularly the
struggles that women have faced over the years whether it has been the right to work, fight for
equal pay, as well as all the other numerous issues they have faced. I have studied this subject by
using this history lens because this is something that has plagued our world since the start of
time. Through this I have used sources such as articles, newspapers, and oral testimonies of
people who lived and experienced these hardships. This lens helps paint a larger picture of the
problems and issues faced overall gathering the story of the tribulations many faced rather than
just one person. “The consequence of the single story is this: It robs people of dignity. It makes
our recognition of equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different rather than how
we are similar; stories matter, many stories matter.” (Adichie, 2009)
This issue has been a problem in our country alone since the founding of this
nation and it took almost a hundred years before any real progress started to be made. Even in
the 1800’s society was aware of the lack of inclusion, and monumental differences in men and
women’s rights as can be viewed by famous authors such as John Stuart Mill who published the
essay on the equality of the sexes that was titled, “The Subjection of the Sexes”. We know that
this became a prominent issue at hand around the mid 1850’s as there was also the first women’s
7
right convention. “On July 19th, 1848, the Seneca Falls convention convened. Heralded as the
first American women’s right’s convention, the two-day event was held in the Wesleyan Chapel
in Seneca Falls, New York.” (LOC, 2024) “In 1872, pioneering female attorney Belva Ann
Lockwood, a member of the American Woman Suffrage Association, persuaded the U.S.
Congress to pass a law guaranteeing equal pay for women employed as federal employees.”
(Barrett, 2017)
This is the type of information that is pivotal in understanding this inequality and how we
first made attempts to change the common workplace. Historians use these materials for many
reasons but mainly because historians are, “concerned with causality, that is, why certain
outcomes happened as they did, and how they are linked to earlier events.”. (History, 2017, para
1) That is the reason I chose to study and examine this topic with the lens of history.
Construct athesis statementthat combines your topic, population, cultural situation, and
choice of general education interdisciplinary lens.
Diversity and inclusiveness are crucial to the progression of the workplace, employers,
and people. Inequality in the workforce is something that continues to this day but has been
known about for hundreds of years; people must be educated on it and taught how to combat it
through means of diversity, and inclusiveness breaking down the gender barriers in the
workplace.

Critical Analysis
Discuss how you wouldconstructively collaboratewith your population to encourage their
engagement with your chosen topic.
There are many ways that I would work to collaborate with women to encourage their
engagement on this topic. “Constructive and inclusive dialogues don’t just happen. They require
careful planning, intentional design, and clear communication.” (VCIC, 2024) I would use
numerous methods to work with these women to inspire them to collaborate and have open
discussions on how to improve this subject. Some of the ways I would do this would include
creating safe and supportive environments, empowering them through participation, listening
actively, educating and informing them, addressing intersectionality, and promoting continuous
learning and adaptation among other methods as well. I believe combining these different
methods would greatly encourage their engagement garnering a more inclusive talk about how to
improve gender inequality in the workplace, doing so would foster a workforce where diversity,
inclusion, and equality flourish.
Describe at least onepositive elementwithin your topic that supports transformation.
While discussing the positive elements of gender equality in the workplace there are
numerous benefits that can be listed. One key statistic that can be seen as positive is that
“companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams were 21% more likely to
outperform on profitability.” (AAUW, 2024) This is one key statistical fact that has been proven
but there are many positive elements that support the transformation of the workplace to promote
equality. Some of the benefits include: a wider talent pool, different perspectives, enhanced
9
collaboration, improved retention, better reflection to customers, improved recruitment and
reputation, and as previously mentioned greater profitability.
Describe at least one specific element within your topic that couldbenefit from change.
There are numerous areas within the topic of gender inequality in the workforce that
could benefit from change. A primary element that could benefit from change is that of the
payment of different sexes. “Women earn an average of 16 percent less than men, meaning they
make 84 cents compared to every dollar earned for man.” (Haan, 2024) Women and mothers
should not get paid less when doing the same duties as their male counterparts and having no
discernable difference other than their reproductive parts and children. Evening the playing field
to say and making sure women and mothers get paid what they have earned would be a huge
improvement on this topic but there would still be a large amount of progress to be made.
Explain how at least onepotential obstaclecould interfere with the population’s
engagement with your topic.
A potential obstacle that could interfere with my given population’s engagement is that of
fear of backlash and negative consequences against them. Some people may likely be hesitant to
speak up when situations arise because they fear the backlash of what their employer may do to
them because of speaking out. “A survey found eighty-seven percent of whistleblowers revealed
that all but one had experienced retaliation.” (Hale, 2021) These women sometimes fear open
discussion because they will be labeled as troublemakers and experience prolonged problems
with certain employers.
10
Assess at least two significantfactors that could impact your topic,such as biases, beliefs,
assumptions, and/or values.
A significant factor that could affect this topic is that of gender bias. “Gender bias exist
when a person faces unfair disadvantages because of their gender.” (SCU, 2020) Gender bias is a
large reason for such inequality in the workforce as we know it. It is a large part of the reason
there are problems such as the pay gap, discrepancies in hiring, and many other egregious errors
that trouble the workforce.
Another significant factor that could play a part and impact this topic is that of
assumptions and values. While some employers may know that a woman is just as capable as a
man to complete a task or job, they may not believe it is right for them. Some believe in the
fallacy that a woman is meant to stay at home, be a housekeeper, and a child raiser. While this is
clearly not the case, this factor plays a role in the reason for gender inequality in the workforce.
Describe a possible outcome of your proposed engagement that might influence thesocietal
conversationsthat add to critical awareness of diversity.
An increase in gender equality in the workforce would as well as the practices at hand
would help influence societal conversations and add to the critical awareness of diversity.
Having an increased engagement in workplace equality will show the benefits of having a
divisive and inclusive equal workforce that the untapped potential is just now starting to be
noticed.
11
Reflection
Describe how critically analyzing your topic has positively informed yourpersonal
experience.
Critically analyzing equality in the workplace as well as diversity makes it clear to see
that if you fully view the way it adds value to the interactions you have with people, it helps in
many ways. First and foremost, this allows you a better understanding, increased empathy, as
well as an openness to be more inclusive. Some of the most obvious ways this is helpful to
anyone is because it helps understand people with different perspectives, helps develop effective
communication, builds empathy, and it can also help increase innovation and creativity. Living in
New York City there is diversity all around me every day, but the realization and just constantly
being aware and open to the diversity allows me to have better conversations whether it just be
with a fellow subway or bus rider, or someone at my job. This helps me because I understand
how much different a person is and that their perspective can be as well. It also helps me because
while I have always been open to diversity I realize now that I must strive to reach out to new
diverse opportunities, I can’t just wait.
Describe how examining yourbiashas altered the way you perceive the world.
By examining my bias this has helped allow me to better understand and recognize the
way that I perceive the world around me. Through the course studies as well as my independent
studies it has become clear that every human has biases, but we must be aware of these and how
they develop as they can play extremely pivotal roles in how different things work like our
behaviors, perceptions, and other significant factors. Examining my own bias has led me to
understand that sometimes I have not always approached different situations with as open as a
12
mind as I should have. Recognizing your own biases forces you to question your assumptions as
well as the value of considering alternative viewpoints. Furthermore, now that I have a greater
understanding of my own biases it allows me to be components of change for a flawed system,
through this I can actively help fight discrimination, unfair practices, and any other inequalities I
come across in my work and personal life.
Describe how this course has helped you understand therole of diversity in society.
This course has helped me understand the role of diversity as well as how to
analyze it and implement it into my life as well as society. When analyzing diversity
there can be many positive direct benefits that correlate directly to your field of
study, profession, or society in general. My role in society is to not only be open to
diversity and aware of it but to push for diversity, seek it out due to it being just as
well as the benefits that it brings to our lives.
Explain how critically analyzing diversity can positivelyinfluence your field of study or
profession.
A main way that this can occur is because better understanding diversity can
help lead anyone to more creative solutions, more possibilities, as well as more
innovation through diversion and inclusion. The diversity of different individuals
allows groups to form and have a larger more diverse range of ideas. These
different views, and ideas from a large group can help spark new ideas and change
what had previously been thought before. Overall, understanding and implementing
diversity has unique rich benefits for anything whether it be a field of study or a
profession.
13
Explain at least one way in which your analysis might have beendifferentif you had used
one of the other general education lenses to analyze your topic.
A way in which my analysis might have differed had I used another lens such as that of
the humanities lens would be that I would have investigated the norms practiced by different
groups. As societies differ in different regions of the world so do their norms and how they
practice everyday life. For example, in certain parts of the world it is a woman’s job to cook,
clean, and raise the family and never go to actual work. While these norms work for these areas,
they would be greatly different examining them than the work I did with the historical lens.
An additional lens that would be very beneficial in using and examining this topic would
be the social science lens. “Social sciences more specifically look at our social relations, our
relationships and our societies.” (Social Science, 2017) This would partially change the analysis
of gender inequality in the workplace because we would view a greater breakdown of the role
society played in the development and practices of inequality in the workplace. “For many
decades, social science research has shown that gender discrimination is an institutional
problem.” (Dr. Zevallos, 2013) Additionally, we could better understand the inner workings of
management and their in-depth perception of the genders. Through the history lens we would
have a breakdown of how things were carried out, the injustices that took place, as well as other
malfeasances that occurred in the workplace over time. However, through the social science lens
we could accurately breakdown the role women played in society over the years, how society
viewed women in the workplace, and just the interpersonal dynamics that played a role in this
subject over the years.
14
Explain how critically analyzing diversity adds value tointeractions with peoplein a
variety of contexts.
There are a variety of ways that critically analyzing diversity adds value to interactions
with people. “Being around people who are different from us makes us more creative, diligent,
and hard working.” (Phillips, 2017) By critically analyzing diversity we gain numerous benefits
when interacting with people such as: better understanding, improved communication, as well as
social cohesion. These are just a few of the benefits of critically analyzing diversity and how it
can help improve your life. By understanding diversity, we can implement it in our daily lives
and work leading to clear benefits such as improved decision making, greater inclusion as well as
equality practices, as well as forward innovation. You do not have to look far to see the
staggering benefits of having a diverse open mind or leading a diverse workforce or team, simply
take the steps and open your mind and you too can experience the positive influence of diversity.
