Cultural Awareness Guidebook
Identify your chosen scenario and conflict.
Conflict #3 – Working with a colleague who is in a different time zone
You and your colleague work at the same organization, but you are based in different countries
and time zones. You are in the United States, while your colleague is in India, which is 10.5
hours ahead of your time zone. You and your colleague are having trouble communicating
effectively, as you are often unavailable during each other’s work hours. You recently began to
miss important deadlines in your current project due to the troubles coordinating your work with
each other, which leads to frustration and tension.

Part One: Social Justice (Complete this section in module two)
1. Explain the difference between justice, fairness, and equality in the scenario.
Justice refers to the moral rightness based on ethics, law, and fairness. In the workplace, justice
can be seen as the fair treatment of all employees, regardless of their position or background. For
example, in this scenario, justice would mean that both my colleague and I would have equal
opportunities to contribute to the project, regardless of our geographical location or time zone.
Fairness is about treating people equally without discrimination. It's about making judgments
without being biased, dishonesty, or injustice. Under these circumstances, fairness would mean
that we both are given equal consideration and respect, despite the time difference.
Equality means that everyone within the organization has equal opportunities and rights. It's
about ensuring that all employees have the same access to benefits, rewards, and opportunities.
However, in this scenario I don’t think equality is reasonable because of the time difference.
Instead I believe the focus should be on equity, which means providing everyone with what they
need to be successful.
$
2. $ $ Describe how bias can influence your perception of social justice in the scenario.
Being biased can really influence our perception of social justice. For instance, if we have
unconscious biases towards certain groups of people, we probably won’t perceive the unfair
treatment they’ve experienced as unjust. This can lead to a lack of empathy and understanding. It
can also hinder efforts to promote social justice in the workplace.
$
3. $ Describe how different narratives in society can impact your perception of social
justice.
Different narratives in society can shape our understanding and perception of social justice. For
instance, narratives that support stereotypes or belittle certain groups can lead to a twisted
perception of what is just and fair. However, narratives that promote equality can help encourage
a more accurate understanding of social justice.
$
4. $ $ Describe the core principles of social justice in the scenario.
$Equity: Ensuring equal opportunities for all employees.
Access: Providing all employees with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.
Participation: Encouraging all employees to participate in decision-making processes.
Rights: Respecting and protecting the rights of all employees. By understanding and applying
these principles, we can create a more just and inclusive workplace.
Part Two: Intercultural Communication and Collaboration
$1. $ $ $ Describe how you would demonstrate cultural fluency in the scenario. (Complete this
section in Module Three.)
By acknowledging the 10.5-hour time difference between the United States and India. This
understanding is vital in scheduling meetings and deadlines that are convenient for both of us. I
could then demonstrate cultural fluency by collaborating with my colleague to try to figure out
the best time for us to communicate due to our different time zones so we can avoid missing
deadlines. Also, by adjusting my schedule occasionally to fit my colleague's time zone this
shows respect for their time and can create a better working relationship.
2. Describe how cultural fluency benefits your self-awareness.
Having knowledge of cultural fluency improves your self-awareness by showing how different
cultural circumstances can shape beliefs and behaviors, helping you to handle interactions with
individuals from diverse cultures with more understanding and respect. This also helps in self-
improvement by allowing us to identify our own cultural biases. For example by Acknowledging
the time difference and finding a common time that works for both of us. This might mean
adjusting work hours a little to overlap with your colleague's work hours. Also by understanding
and respecting the cultural norms of your colleague. This involves learning about Indian
holidays, work culture, and communication styles.
$
3.$ $ $ Describe how an awareness of other cultures can benefit interpersonal
communication with people in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.)
$When team members are aware of diverse cultures within their team, they are more likely to
consider multiple points of views in their decision-making process. The teams that are aware of
and use their diverse strengths tend to perform better because they can draw from a wider range
of experiences. Awareness of diversity can lead to a more respectful and balanced work
environment, and as team members are more likely to consider each other's differences. For
example by recognizing that my colleague in India is working at a different time this can better
help plan communication and deadlines more effectively. We could agree on a common time that
is convenient for both parties for meetings or updates.
4. $ $ $ Describe how exposure to diverse backgrounds can positively influence
communication in the scenario. (Complete this section in Module Four.)
When people are exposed to diverse backgrounds, they gain a wider perspective on multiple
issues. Having this understanding can promote empathy which is important in conflict resolution.
Empathy allows people to understand and share the feelings of others, therefore creating
effective communication. Exposure to diversity also encourages open-mindedness. Open-minded
people are more likely to listen to and consider different viewpoints during a conflict, which can
lead to more effective communication and resolution.$
$
5. $ $ $ Explain why an awareness of diversity is beneficial to collaboration in the scenario.
(Complete this section in Module Four.)
By being aware of cultural differences, accepting diverse backgrounds, and understanding the
significance of diversity can improve communication and collaboration, especially in a scenario
where colleagues are working across different time zones. Having this awareness can lead to
increased flexible scheduling, improved empathy, and a more comprehensive work environment,
all of which are important for meeting deadlines and achieving project goals. Having awareness
of diverse backgrounds can positively influence communication in conflict by promoting
understanding, open-mindedness, encouraging respectful communication, providing different
conflict resolution strategies, and encouraging creativity and modernization.$
Part Three: Communication Strategies to Navigate Conflict (Complete this section in
Module Five.)
$
1. $ $ $ Describe the components of the conflict represented in the scenario.
The different time zones make it difficult for the coworkers to communicate effectively since
there is a 10.5-hour time difference. Due to their communication issues, they are not able to meet
their deadlines at work.$
$
2. $ $ $ Describe different interpersonal communication strategies that can be used in conflict
resolution.
One interpersonal communication strategy that could be applied to this conflict is written
communication. Written communication such as emails and text messages could be used to
better communicate in this situation and could also be used to schedule phone calls (verbal
communication) where both colleagues could make themselves available to meet their deadlines.
$
3. $ $ $ Choose an appropriate communication strategy you would employ in the scenario.
Include an explanation of why you chose that communication strategy.$
The communication strategy I would use is written communication. The reason why I believe
written communication would be appropriate for this scenario is because with there being a 10.5-
hour time difference it can be hard to get in contact with one another with phone calls alone since
one maybe asleep written communication can be used to help schedule times that could speak on
the phone or video chat. It could also be used to just touch bases to see where each other is on the
project.$
$
4. $ $ Describe the potential challenges of communication in the scenario.$
One of the challenges of communication in this scenario includes having different cultural
backgrounds which can lead to misunderstandings or misinterpretations of messages. Each
culture has its own norms and values, which can influence the way people communicate.
$
5. $ $ Describe the benefits and challenges of using restorative practices to navigate the
conflict in the scenario.
$It can help improve the relationship between the colleagues by addressing the root cause of the
conflict. It can also promote better understanding and empathy which can prevent similar
conflicts in the future. Some of the challenges would be that it can be time-consuming as it
involves thorough discussions and negotiations. It also would require commitment since both
parties need to be committed to the process for it to be successful.$
