HUM 202 Discussion 6-1
The White Way, c. 1926, by American author John Sloan, who lived from 1871 to 1951, was my
choice for this week's essay. This work of art, The Bustling City Streets of New York, features
snow-covered pedestrians on Broadway and Fifty-Third Street on a wintry evening. As the artist
said, "The reality of my surroundings had been frozen in my mind," we can see him standing
there and observing city life as it goes about its business, maybe appreciating how far society has
gone. It is obvious that we are living in a contemporary age. You may see passing automobiles, a
trolley, big buildings with lots of lights, and construction boards in the backdrop. Sloan was a
true sculptor who supported Liberalism's tenets, despite the fact that he personally separated his
political views from his artistic endeavors. He frequently painted street scenes, restaurant scenes,
paintings of saloons, ferry crossings, and other sensitive pictures of city inhabitants socializing.
