Oftentimes, I will make references to videos I watch, or stories that I
have heard from my friends and family. A specific example is when I
am talking with my mother as we are driving through country lands, I
will speak of folklore that I have heard about, as the surroundings
invoke thoughts of the stories or videos of stories I heard. My
mother is extremely skeptical of anything outside the realm of
reality, so I tend to recount the stories in a more scientific view for
her to understand and believe them better. This may include giving
psychological reasonings for the beliefs in groups of people,
comparing and contrasting our knowledge with others’ knowledge,
and giving contextual insight as to where these stories originated
from. Sometimes this approach still does not have an impact on her,
as it does with me, but one example I gave of Native American
legends did seem to pique her interest due to the story sharing
similarities of her ethics, morals, and religious beliefs which invoked
an emotional response rather than a logical response.
