The cultural work I have chosen is the song ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by
Nirvana. The singer and guitarist of the band, Kurt Cobain, wrote the song in
1990 and recorded and released it in 1991, the same year I was born. My
father’s favorite band was Nirvana, and this was his favorite song of theirs.
My father had a severe heroin addiction and ended up dying from an
overdose when I was 10. Every time I was able to see him, he would play this
song on the record player and sing it to me. I correlate this song to some of
my happiest times with him to some of my deepest traumas surrounding
