Final Project II – Self Evaluation

When reviewing my counseling session, it could have used some improvement. I will
admit I went into this assignment thinking I knew exactly what I would say and how to handle
this session. As I started, I knew in the first minute the feeling of sinking. Being a counselor is
going to be hard and I am up for that challenge, but I was not prepared for what holding a session
would look like. Right off the bat I was overwhelmed with the feeling that I was talking too
much. This scenario was the clients first session so being able to guide him to speak freely was
important. I could tell I was expressing empathy and I believe my client could as well but next
time I would give the client more of a chance to guide the session. While it couldn’t be conveyed
through the audio, I was very proud of myself because I did maintain comfortable body language
and eye contact to keep my client engaged.
My volunteer was my husband, Cody, and he chose the second scenario as a client
coming in for his first session for a mild cannabis disorder. This scenario fit our life almost to a
tee because my husband has struggled with this due to a work injury years ago. He has always
said having his medical marijuana card and using it medicinally has greatly helped his pain
however he ultimately stopped his usage because he noticed such a change in himself and no
longer felt present when he was around our family. Because we went through this and the
concerns I voiced and the feelings he had were relevant to this scenario it was easy for me to
