5-2 Journal: Treatment Goals
October 3, 2021
The focus of this case study is Katie. Katie has struggled through addiction, childhood
trauma, denial, legal issues, and many other stressors in her life. There are quite a few
therapeutic approaches that could help Katie and her situation, but I will focus on the main
approaches that at present are the most pressing.
Psychoanalytic Therapy is the first approach. The Psychoanalytic approach focuses on
the unconscious mind giving the client a chance to see what influences their behaviors and
feelings. This would be very helpful in Katie’s situation because she has many suppressed
feelings following the traumatic death of her sister, Sarah.
Cognitive Therapy is the next approach. The Cognitive approach is a collaborative
effort of both the client and the counselor where the client focuses on current behavior rather
than past experiences. In Katie’s situation she has a history of blaming others rather than taking
responsibility for her own actions. Through this approach we can focus on her behavior together.
Family Systems Therapy is the final approach. The Family Systems approach will focus
on the structure and relationships within Katie’s family. Katie comes from a dysfunctional family
consisting of strained rand traumatic relationships. Katie has kept this pattern going within her
own family beginning with the tense relationship with her husband and codependent relationship
with her daughter.
