The organization I chose for my project is the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. The client-
facing role within this organization that I am choosing is a Child Welfare Specialist. The
responsibilities of this profession include facilitating and participating in family team meetings,
conducting home visits, recieves intakes and asesses or investigates allegations of abuse or neglect.
This profession involves going into the homes of families and meeting with the parents and children
and making sure that abuse or neglect is not occuring and if it is taking the correct action to get the
children out of that home and somewhere safe. After that working with the family and all other
members of the team to meet the end goal for the family. This role relates to the steps of the larger
helping process by being just the beginning of the intervention of the problems within the families.
This role goes out and finds the proof and helps to start the process of correcting it within the family
or finding a new home for the children to be placed in and loved. After the family goes into so many
other areas of help, getting to the root of the issue and finding ways to correct those issues.
My choice is a Mental Health Counsellor. After reading Chapter 7, it gives me the insight of how to
approach and interact with a client as a helper to them. This role listens to a clients reason for being in
counselling and it also gives an estimate time to spend with a counsellor to cover all the needs for their
counselling. In this job it is the helper’s role to be in full attention to the client. Greeting the client in a
positive manner to help the client relax in the atmosphere and to be able to look at the helper face to
face and have a good idea and impression of who the client is with. The helper needs to show that their
focus is on the client and the kind of counseling needed for the client. A Mental Health Counselor has
the job of assessing the client, providing client in education, maybe at some point conducting family
groups with relatives, working closely with your client’s needs, identify problems, troubleshooting
social challenges and have referrals for further needs to a more professional help then counseling can
provide. The goal is to be the helper a client can reach out to for support and encouragement.
A client-facing role used by human services professionals within the Community Action Program is
the Senior Center Resource Manager. The Senior Center Resource Manager is responsible for the day-
to-day operations of the Senior Center, which includes Meals on Wheels, community dining,
activities, and other senior programs. This Manager evaluates the client’s specific nutritional needs for
the program and arranges for appropriate delivery of these meals. This is like the helping process in
chapter seven of our textbook because this Resource Manager prepares to meet with each client,
explore their individual needs, and helps.
