Client-facing role that is used by human service professionals within the agency
you selected.
The specific client-facing role I chose is mental health and substance use and
abuse counselor. A brief counseling intervention focuses on reaching specific
outcomes in a very short time making significant changes in the client's life
targeting behavior, targeting behaviors that need to be changed. Facilitating the
change, and helping the clients make new choices and improving their thinking
processes. (Woodside, McClam, 2019, p. 187). Resolution-focused brief therapy is
a tool to implement a solution for the client and so that the client can focus on the
change and work on changing. There are four strategies that implement resolution
focus brief therapy. The process can be experienced by the helping professional
while trying to find positive solutions and resources to better help the client
succeed. The four resolution-focus based therapy tools used include:
1-
Relationship building is at the heart of this brief counseling process.
In summary
building rapport and understanding the client lets the helper gain precise
description of the problem and from there the helper can create a plan to help the
client solve the problem.
2-
The helper continues to identify client strengths by asking about experiences
with positive outcomes.
In summary the client explains the situation/problem that
he or she has had with a positive outcome. The helper tries to identify the
strengths of the client and what the client's problems are and what they're facing.
3-
The helper and the client establish certain goals.
In summary this tool is to
establish goals and target the individual goals that the client wants to meet. A plan
is put in place to make the goal measurable and concreate.
4-
The helper and the client begin to talk about how to reach the goal.
In summary
the helper works on the goal together with the client. The helper may give the
client "homework" on specifics to help the client after each session. (Woodside,
McClam, 2019, p. 188).
I think to really piece everything together I will have to be an effective listener, an
effective communicator, and an action oriented individual seeking answers and
finding resources for my clients. There are four tools in communication that our
text explains they include:
1- Visual/eye contact
2-Vocal qualities
3-Verbal tracking
4- Body language: Attentive
(Woodside, McClam, 2019, p. 170)
I understand that some of the job duties of a mental health and substance use, and
abuse counselor consist of assessments, case planning, goal-oriented counseling,
evaluations, and client termination of services. a The process of becoming an
effective counselor is going to take practice and determination and wanting to see
the client reach their full potential.
