Health care shortages are at an all-time high in this country. It is projected
that by 2025 there will be a shortage of 400,000 home health aides and
29,400 nurse practitioners (Duquesne University n.d.). By 2032, the U.S. is
expecting a shortage of 122,000 physicians as well as a 48% growth in the
over-65 population (Duquesne University n.d.). The shortage of workers
combined with the dramatic increase in the expected over-65 population
that will need high levels of healthcare for 1 or more chronic illnesses is
projected to cripple the system if no preparation or problem solving is
done. There are several problems stemming from this shortage and
problems that exacerbate the issue. One issue is the time limitations for
everything outside of a healthcare worker’s essential job duties when the
workplace is short-staffed.
Finding the time for training in a normal-paced, fully-staffed company is
tricky enough. In a healthcare setting where there are extreme worker
shortages, a fast-paced environment, and a high risk if errors are made or
tasks not performed, training and implementing changes becomes nearly
impossible. If one nurse is pulling a double shift to help with coverage and
trying to perform the workload of two people, they cannot add anything
else to their plate. Being strapped for time is one of three major problems
when it comes to training in hospitals, along with employees’ struggle with
engagement and the constantly changing policies in healthcare (Nichols
n.d.). When it comes to training on and implementing federal rulings such
as HIPAA and HITECH, a lack of enthusiasm for law combined with no
spare time results in an untrained and unchanged environment.:
