The health care is a industry is always changing and so is the people
that are staffed within the healthcare system. As patients we expect
an error free visit every time we receive care whether it is in a
hospital, and or a a doctors office but being short staffed it can have an
affect on the quality of care. Clinical staff that are being overworked
tend to make simple mistakes that can put the company in jeopardy
from federal rulings like HIPAA and HITECH. According to nurse Grid,
Proper nursing hinges on details. When nurses are rushed, they are
more likely to miss aspects they otherwise would have noticed.
Despite a number of fail safes in hospitals, the final one is the nurse.
When nurses are exhausted from yet another short-staffed shift, this
fail safe can fail, and med errors can be devastating (nursegrid, 2020).
Most of the time when clinical staff is short staffed they don't have
time to double check their work they are more than likely saving their
work and moving on to the next patient. the federal ruling Hitech is
affected by short staff because this federal ruling has allowed doctors
and nurses to be able to take electronics into the patients room to be
more efficient and if the doctor or nurse is stretched thin its a
possibility they may forget to lock the computer, enter the wrong
information and or give the patient access to other patients records
which could result in a huge lawsuit and possibly the health system
having to close because they can't afford to pay the fines.
