Scenario 1
In the specific scenario relating to the research study that is
being conducted by a physician, the main challenge is the
existence of biased behavior. It has been observed that the
physician who is responsible for doing the research study has
been targeting certain patients and removing them from the
study. Bias in a research context is considered to be unethical
since it can lead to misleading outcomes as well as inaccurate
results (Giavarina, 2015). Since he has been eliminating the
patients who are sick or have a low level of income, the
ultimate findings of the research study could be distorted.
In order to remove biases in the research study, some of the steps
that can be taken include strict adherence to a code of conduct while
working on the research study, keeping personal prejudice aside
while investigating the topic, adopting stringent and ethical research
policy, that encourages an accountable and moral stance while
conducting the study.
There exists a vital relationship between ethics and policy. Ethics
revolves around moral behavior so that one can distinguish between
right and wrong. On the other hand, policy can serve as a vital
instrument that can be introduced in place to support ethical
behavior. They must comply with the fundamental principles of
ethics. Even though policy can play a key role in supporting ethical
behavior, it might not always match up with ethics. For instance,
there may be times when the policies that are adopted by an
organization do not align with ethical practices. For example, the
policy of an organization might support research on diverse human
subjects to create new medicine. However, such an approach might
not be ethical since they may be exposed to harm, and their safety
might be compromised.
In case individual ethics are not aligned with organizational
policies, the actions that are taken by the person may not be
acceptable to the firm. The end result could be the adoption of
poor practices within the organization which lack uniformity
and consistency. For example, in case a person does not believe
in honesty and integrity whereas the organizational policy is
based on these ethical elements, he may still indulge in such
practices. It could lead to a poor work culture where the
organizational policies are not adhered to by the members of
the workforce. Thus, the misalignment between individual
ethics and organizational policy could affect how ethically the
firm operates.
