Nowadays, the demand for EHR has increased in the healthcare industry because of
its broad range of benefits to manage the patient’s data. An EHR stands for an electronic
health record, which is a digital version of a paper chart for a patient. These electronic
health records are basically patient-centered records that are used in real-time to make
information available securely and instantly to authorized users. An electronic health record
is an important part of the health IT that can automate and streamline provider workflow,
allow access to evidence-based tools, and contain the medical history of the patient, their
medications, diagnoses, immunization dates, treatment plans, radiology images, allergies,
and test and laboratory results (What is an electronic health record (EHR)? HealthIT.gov,
2019). In 2009, the National Alliance for Health Information Technology (NAHIT) defined
an EHR as an electronic record of health-related information of a person that can be
managed and consulted by the authorized medical staffs and authorized clinicians across
one or more health care organizations by following the nationally recognized
interoperability standards (Contributor, 2012).
Types of information found in an EHR
All electronic health record systems consist of two major components that include
clinical applications and administrative applications. The clinical applications of an EHR
involve medical information related to the storage, collection, and display. Moreover, the
administration application includes information related to patient scheduling, business or
financial functions, admission or registration, and other management applications
(Odekunle, 2016).

The management of the electronic health record systems and information are the
property of the health care provider. Therefore, the health care providers manage all the
information records (Odekunle, 2016).
The usage of EHR
An electronic health record system is used to manage clinical workflows as well as
to capture patients’ medical information over time across healthcare administration and
clinical care. In order to offer the most up-to-date medical information, this EHR system is
now used by all the parties within the healthcare of a patient. This EHR system is very
helpful in providing current care to the patient as the data can be overlooked by the doctors,
staff, and other associated parties (Gliklich et al., 2019).
EHR follows the patient to other health facilities
Yes, an EHR can follow the patient to other health facilities in certain
circumstances. If the same EHR software is used by the health facilities, then it is possible
to pull up the patient’s notes, chart, labs, or imaging from the clinic without requesting or
authorization of this information. However, if the healthcare organization is operating with
different EHRs, then it is necessary to provide a Health Information Exchange. Moreover, if
the clinics are not using the same EHRs, then also they can share the information through
Regional Health Information Organization (Burton et al., 2004). In general, the Regional
Health Information Organizations are considered as the medical information about the
individual patients that are produced through an electronic network. It is basically collected
from various health care organizations from a specific regional location (Burton et al.,
2004). Likely, it is possible for a clinic to follow the patient’s EHR to other health facilities.
