Gateway Healthcare Systems is in dire need of cultural diversity
education. Minus two employees who have physical needs the HIM
departments are bare of diversity and consist of primarily the same
race and religion. b To further diversify Gateway Healthcare Systems I
would suggest the following training:
• Implementing a fun learning system such as Blue Ocean Brain
which allows employees to read short narratives/watch brief
videos and then answer a question to earn points. There will be
a leaderboard available for all to see and you can make this into
a type of competition to boost diversity. Blue Ocean Brain
features situations that occur on a daily basis and new
challenges that have proved themselves during the pandemic. b
My employer previously used this resource and it was a
smashing hit at our organization.
• We will implement Business Resource Groups which will break
down into a person's nationality and ethnicity. b Anyone may
join any business resource group and it is encouraged to help
employees gain better knowledge and become more respectful
of their fellow team members. By holding events in the
community it will show the community that Gateway is working
hard to diversify it's workforce.
• Gateway will hold diversity training each quarter for
employees. This training will be mandatory for each employee,
however they will only need to attend once per year. The
training will discuss how to communicate respectfully with
fellow employees and patients, work on understanding others
values and beliefs, and how to handle difficult situations that
may occur in the workplace. b We want to preach equality for all
regardless of age, sex, gender, sexuality, race, religion,
disability, etc.
• Gateway will also be completely overhauling its hiring
committee. After reviewing the hiring committee and seeing
how they passed on a perfectly credentialed and capable
manager because of their need of a wheelchair. That is
absolutely unacceptable and could be met with serious legal
implications.
Diversity can enhance the quality and efficiency of the department
because regardless of who a person is, no two people are really the
same. It is of the utmost importance to remember that respect is
earned not given. b There will always be people resistant to change,
especially the elder generation who believe the way they are doing
things is perfectly correct and without them even knowing they may
be offending others. I have seen this firsthand and been on the end
of being offended. b It is not pleasant for anyone involved. b Working in
healthcare and especially in a hospital setting, teamwork is key so
when employees do not get along or do not respect each other things
will start so decline in a way that will harm the organization. Without
a staff who are culturally diverse the organization can be seen
through some eyes as not being equal opportunity for all.
