DECISION MAKING

Information Management and Technology
In this paper as a HIM manager we will assess the decision-making processes for addressing
future technology needs. We shall be discussing the procedural changes that should be in place
to avoid a scenario like the one portrayed in the lecture video.
Decision-Making Considerations
Stakeholders
The important stakeholders who must be involved in decisions relating to the technology needs
include the IT team, the management team, policymakers, and other administrative
professionals (Peek et al., 2016). In the case of the decision relating to the introduction and
implementation of electrical health records, the important stakeholders are IT team, clinicians,
administration, and board members, and HIM manager. The main rationale behind including
the IT team in the discussion is that they are the professionals who will actually implement the
EHR system in the healthcare setting. They can provide the management with insights relating
to the resources that the healthcare organization already has and the resources that will be
required in order to support the implementation of the EHR system. They can also help in the
selection of the right electronic health record system to meet the requirements of the healthcare
organization. The IT team can provide valuable information relating to the essential features
and functionalities that the EHR system must have.
The rationale behind including clinicians such as nurses, physicians, and other
important health staff is that they are the people who will be using the electronic health records.
They can provide insights relating to the workflow and the way the information of the patients is
recorded (Green, 2018). The rationale behind including the administrative staff as well as the
board members is that they play an important role in finances and management. They can shed
light on the financial aspect of electronic health records. They can also initiate discussion
relating to the opportunities as well as challenges of the implementation of electronic health

records. The board members will play a significant role in making operational as well as
financial decisions relating to the EHR project. It is important to convince this stakeholder
group that implementing the electronic health record system can be an ideal investment.
HIM Director
The HIM director will play an important role in the technology decision-making process. The
HIM director will inquire about the methods that will be employed to collect patient data, record
them, and report different activities through the electronic health record system (Spath, 2009).
The director will ensure that the implementation of the EHR system follows all the important
rules and regulations. The director will also audit and inquire about the quality of
documentation of the patient records. The HIM director will also oversee the data recording
process to ensure the optimum privacy of the patients.
Strategic Plan
The procedure of the technology decision-making process includes several steps. At first, the
electronic health record system will be assessed properly to determine its benefits for the
healthcare organization. In the second step, the responsibility of implementing the electronic
health record system will be assigned to the respective individuals. The technology that is
available to implement the EHR system will be assessed. In the next step, a long-term plan will
be designed for the effective implementation of the system. The final step will be to implement
the electronic health record system in the healthcare organization.
