ICD-11 recently went into effect and is currently being used by 35
countries. The improvements in ICD-11 reflect the advancements
made in science and medicine since the release of ICD-10, which has
become technologically and scientifically outdated. Some of the
more generic improvements in this area would be things like the
important details for cancer registries now being fully integrated
within ICD-11, and coding traffic accidents made easier by being
more consistent with international practices for documentation and
analysis. Aside from updating the medical functionality of the system,
ICD-11 has been updated to be more user-friendly and more in-line
with the advancements in digital technology that have been made
since ICD-10 was released two decades ago.
Looking at ICD-11 from a lawmaker perspective, the medical
terminology and improvements might be lost on them. However,
there are some major benefits that this coding system brings that
even non-medical workers could understand. ICD-11 has improved
the ease of use for coding which will require less training for
healthcare workers, and it also includes multilingual support with
built-in user guidance for coding. This means that money will be
saved on training, and faster accurate coding means higher
productivity levels.
