The data breach that took place at the health clinic in Massachusetts
was very unfortunate and could have been avoided. Some steps that
could be taken to prevent this from happening again are using
authorization to log on to computers, setting up security clearance
for what certain employees are able to access, and making sure all
employees are locking or logging off their computers when they are
stepping away or leaving for the day.
An organization having effective privacy and security strategies
determines their success. If an organization is known to have data
breaches patients are not going to want to go there. Not having the
proper privacy and security measures can also lead to patients not
receiving the proper treatments and costing an organization money.
NEHEN not only has an ethical obligation to protection patient
information, but a legal one as well. The Massachusetts health clinic
should of course follow all HIPPA rules and regulations. Ensuring that
all new employees partake in a HIPPA class can help prevent
situations like this from possibly happening.
