This term has been an experience, the evolution of communication
and technology will always affect the HIM professional because it is
ever-changing. HIM professionals will always be in need; with
information always coming and going and new ways to send and
receive, we as an organization will always need to keep our patients
and their information safe. Some barriers I see for HIEs are more
connectivity between hospitals/ clinics and the costs of
implementing the software, technology, and so on.
You still have hospitals and clinics that cannot afford the cost of
switching from paper to EHRs and the fear of total connection to a
network that may or may not be completely secure or safe. However,
I believe that this technology will eventually lead to a nationwide
system; then, no matter what state you visit, if you need a doctor,
they will access your records 2500 miles from home.
