In the scenario, there was a data breach in a Massachusetts health
clinic that affected possibly 3,840 patients. Information that was
compromised in that data breach included social security numbers,
names, addresses and dates of birth. This breach violated each of its
patient's privacy and protected health information. In order to
prevent this type of thing from happening again, the health clinic
should implement some kind of authentication when users are
logging in to the system. They should ensure that each team member
has a strong password that includes numbers and symbols so that
way it is not easily guessed. Requiring that the passwords change
after a certain length of time will help to prevent data breaches as
well. Even with those safeguards in place, it would also help to
implement some kind of two-factor authentication to add an extra
layer of security.
Effectively protecting patient information and regularly monitoring
for weaknesses in the system will help the patients feel secure in
their care and help them to feel they can share their personal
information without worry. Maintaining this security will help a
healthcare organization effectively and efficiently run their business.
Preventing breaches in patient information will also help a healthcare
organization avoid costly fines and penalties.
The clinic mentioned in this scenario should regularly audit their
systems so they know where the weak spots are and can address
them before there is an issue. Conducting a risk assessment can
identify where there is vulnerability and where there the potential
risks are. Maintaining HIPPA and keeping its patient’s information
safe and secure is what the clinic is legally obligated to do.
