Steps in information governance lifecycle –
The main steps that are involved in the information governance lifecycle include
identification of information that is available with the organization, analyzing and classifying the
information, and managing the information. Information can be managed in diverse ways, such
as optimizing information, investigating it, securing it, and/or managing the information
lifecycle. The last stage of the information governance lifecycle involves monitoring the progress
and evaluating improvements. The adoption of these steps is considered crucial to optimally use
information (Information life cycle governance - princeton university, 2021).
Information governance plan –
An information governance plan refers to a blueprint that presents a holistic approach for
managing organizational information. It can be used as a guide to implement processes, controls,
roles, and metrics. In the prevailing times when the volume of data and information is expanding
at an unprecedented rate, having an information governance plan is considered to be a
fundamental necessity as it helps to understand the information governance strategy that would
be adopted in order to handle information effectively and optimally. The proper adherence to a
well-defined plan can help an entity in diverse ways by minimizing legal risks associated with
inconsistent information management, diminishing storage costs, and supporting compliance
(Iannarelli & O’Shaughnessy, 2014).
Impact of Information governance plan on data quality –
An information governance plan can help to address data quality issues. According to the
American Health Information Management (AHIMA), an information governance plan revolves
around the accountability framework or who is responsible for carrying out which function
(Warner, 2013). It helps to maintain the quality of data in an organizational setting by

influencing the decisions that are made in relation to the information assets. A solid information
governance plan mitigates risk relating to poor data quality by assessing risks, comprehending
the existing gaps, and performing advanced planning. Such a plan also helps to enhance data
quality by making sure that relevant policies, tools, and protocols are in place that would enable
HIM practitioners to manage data and information (Warner, 2013).
Importance of Information governance plan –
It is important for healthcare facilities to create an information governance plan as it can
help to manage digital assets i.e., data and information, in a strategic manner. It serves as a
blueprint that can guide the employees to carefully and securely handle data and use it to carry
out their roles and responsibilities. It has a direct implication on healthcare decisions and the
quality of care services that are delivered by healthcare practitioners to patients (Datta et al.,
2019).
