Health Information Exchange (HIE) is the electronic movement of health-related
information among organizations according to nationally recognized standards with the
goal to facilitate access to and retrieval of clinical data to provide safer, timelier, efficient,
effective, equitable, patient centered care (Oachs & Watters, 2020).” (Health information
exchange (HIE) makes data available when needed and through data aggregation of best
outcomes, a foundation for fact-based diagnosis and treatments provided. This allows for
healthcare systems and facilities to stay in compliance to regulations like safety and
privacy and only share what is needed for patient and other providers access.
Interoperability “is the capability of different information systems and software
applications to communicate and exchange data (Oachs & Watters, 2020).” Within such
systems there is a need to use protective services like security (cybersecurity) and
following regulations withing privacy acts like HIPAA.
