Walmart is one the world’s largest retailers and unfortunately has a major negative
impact on the environment. They have created a large carbon footprint, mostly from the high use
of the supply chain. This requires high levels of emissions and development of large stores that
leads to the destruction of habitats.
The transportation emissions from Walmart are caused from the mass amount of trucks
used to transport goods. This has caused air pollution and affects climate change. Communities
with high traffic have particularly been affected due to more greenhouse gas emissions versus a
more rural area. Walmart stores are also beginning to be constructed in undeveloped areas. This
causes habitat reduction and greater dependence on transportation to shop. This company also
has increased waste from packaging which affects waste management.
On the other hand, Walmart states that they are making progress in sustainability efforts.
They state that by 2025 they are planning “to source palm oil, beef, soy, pulp, paper, and timber
100% deforestation-free,” and also 20 key commodities more sustainable. Walmart claims to
work towards zero waste in operations in key markets. They plan to have materials be recycled
instead of thrown away through private-brand packaging. Walmart has been on a 15 year plan for
sustainability through leadership and have discussed being on the path to becoming a
regenerative company.
Improving sustainability by 2040 seems to be the ultimate goal for Walmart. Right now,
they power about 36% of their operations with wind, solar, and other energy sources, but aim for
100% use of renewable energy by 2035. Walmart would like to also achieve net-zero emissions
from all of their vehicles, including shipping trucks. Lastly, the company would like to switch to
low impact refrigerants and electrified equipment for all stores, clubs, data centers, and
distribution centers.
People at home can help Walmart’s environmental impact in several different ways. If we
primarily buy sustainable products, like eco-friendly detergent or plates, we can contribute to a
positive impact on the environment through Walmart. Choosing items with limited packaging
and then recycling the packaging is also an option. Walmart could maybe get some tips from
Aldi who does not provide plastic bags, which encourages the use of reusable bags. The biggest
recommendation I have for those that shop at Walmart, or any other store for that matter, is to
constantly make deliberate decisions on what, how, and how much you buy. As always, staying
informed about sustainability is the number one step to prioritizing the world for the future.
