Western Europe Region
1. Location and Connectivity: What are the
absolute and relative locations of your
selected region? How does this region connect
to others?
Stretching from Ireland all the way to the Czechia, is the Western Europe Region and is located in the
European Realm which lies on the western flank of Eurasia and is bound by the Arctic Ocean to the north,
the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the waters of the Mediterranean to the south is the Western
European Region. The absolute location of Ireland is 53.4129° N, 8.2439° W and the absolute location of
Czechia is 49.8175° N, 15.4730° E. The countries that make up the Western Europe Region are Ireland,
the United Kingdom (U.K.), France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland,
Austria, and Czechia or the Czech Republic. The Western Europe Region is bordered to the north by
Northern Europe, to the south by Mediterranean Europe, to the east by Eastern Europe, and by the
Atlantic Ocean to the west (Nijman, J., Muller, P. O., & Shin, M., 2020). For the most part, aside from the
United Kingdom and Ireland, the Western Europe Region is connected to and has ground travel
accessibility to most other areas in Northern, Eastern, and Mediterranean Europe. Being that the United
Kingdom and Ireland are surrounded by bodies of water, travel by air or water would be required to gain
access to other regions as well as other countries within the Western Europe Region (Nijman, J., Muller,
P. O., & Shin, M., 2020).
2. Physical Characteristics: How would you
describe the climate, physiography, landscape,
and natural hazards of your selected region?
Address at least three of the physical
characteristics listed above for this worksheet.
Note: This is part of the Place theme of
geography.
Western Europe Region's climate can be described as having predominately humid temperate climates
meaning that climatic severity or extremes are not suffered; however, areas further away from bodies of
water that moderate temperatures can experience cold winters. Under this regime, fertile and productive
soils have developed (Nijman, J., Muller, P. O., & Shin, M., 2020). Northern and Central France, the U.K.,
