The Southeast Region is a geographical region of the North American Realm and its absolute location is N 63°,57’ 37.3932’’, W 143°, 37’ 46.92
(Southeast region of the United States, n.d.). The Southeast Region consists of the lower east coast states of the United States stretching inland
from the Atlantic Ocean to Louisiana at 30.9843° N, 91.9623° W and Arkansas at 34.5574° N, 92.2863° W. The Southeast Region extends south to
border the eastern gulf coast and north to Virginia at 37.4316° N, 78.6569° W and West Virginia at 38.5976° N, 80.4549° W. The twelve states that
make up this region are Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky,
Virginia, and West Virginia. The Southeast Region is bordered by the Northeast Region, Southwest region, Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic Ocean

The southeast Region consists of both highlands and lowlands. States in the lower/southern section of the Southeast Region feature wetlands,
swamps, and beaches, while states in the upper/northern section feature fertile river valleys, plateaus (high flat areas), and rolling hills. The
Appalachian Mountains, the Coastal Plain, and the Piedmont are three distinct landforms of the region (Nijman, J., Muller, P. O., & Shin, M.,
2020). Extending from the northeast, the Appalachian Mountains cover areas of the Southeast Region as they move through West Virginia, eastern
portions of Kentucky, Southwest Virginia, eastern portions of Tennessee, western portion of North Carolina, northwestern portion of South
Carolina, northern portions of Georgia and stretch all the way down to Flagg Mountain in Central Alabama. Just south of Weogufka, Alabama,
Flagg Mountain is approximately 1,000 feet in elevation (Southern Appalachians, n.d.). Encompassing the south Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, 188
million acres of the Coastal Plain sub-region span from the Virginia coastal plain, south to the Florida peninsula, and then run along the Gulf Coast.
