2-5 Assignment – Importance of Analysis
In the article “Caring for your Introvert: the habits and needs of a little-understood
group,” author Jonathan Rauch discusses the many misconceptions society has about
introverts. Very early on in the article, we learn Rauch himself is an introvert. The author uses
an expository narrative, giving the readers an inside look into introversion from an introverts
perspective. Rauch goes on to define what introversion is, the percentage of the population
that are introverts, and how to better respect and support an introvert if you encounter one.
Rauch’s tone is a witty and light-hearted one, as a reader will easily pick up on when reading
through the article. Although his tone is not serious, Rauch does make some good points, while
also bringing awareness to an easily misunderstood personality type.
A valuable way to read “Caring for your Introvert: the habits and needs of a little-
understood group” would be what is called problem and solution. The author presents a
problem, and then creates a solution. The problem being the misinterpretation of an
introvert, and the solution would be how society can better cope with and respond to
an individual with this personality trait. Rauch breaks it down even further, while providing
characteristics of introverts, he also goes into detailed description on their counterparts. This
shows that his opinion is not only one-sided, thus making the article objective rather than
subjective.
Rauch’s ability to reach a wide audience is what really makes the intention of this article
so effective. First and foremost, he gets the identification factor from other introverts. At the
same time, an extrovert who is reading the article can gain a better understanding and respect
for a person that they otherwise think they have nothing in common with. By the author opting
to discuss both sides, the contents of this article will appeal to a much larger crowd of readers.
Rauch’s choice of words may come off as direct and blunt, but one thing that remains
consistent throughout the article is his capacity to never take himself too seriously, making it
even more enjoyable to read.
