Describe how this is similar to a "contract" between management and labor. Do you
believe it is written at the correct level of detail (e.g., is it too vague and therefore needing
more specific details, or is it broad enough for logical interpretation)? Provide several
specific examples.
The CBA is similar to a contract between management and labor because structurally, it
outlines nearly every aspect of the working environment and all associated aspects such as
wages, dress code, insurance benefits, and more. It describes in detail processes and procedures
for nearly all workplace incidents and scenarios, similar to a “contract” between management
and labor. I do believe it is written at the correct level of detail. It is clear and concise while still
covering nearly every possible workplace scenario that could come about. One specific example
is in the Non-Discrimination article that says neither the union nor school can discriminate based
upon “race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, age, creed, disability, handicap, marital
status, citizenship status, Vietnam Era or disabled veteran status, sexual orientation, gender
identity and expression, or for union activities or union status” (Columbia University, 2020).
Another instance in which a sufficient level of detail was provided is under the overtime article
stating “Employees shall be compensated at the rate of one and one-half times their regular pay
for authorized time worked in excess of the regular full-time work week, up to forty (40) hours,
by receiving either pay for such overtime worked or compensatory time off” (Columbia
University, 2020). While seemingly obvious as this is the usual standard for overtime, it provides
clear details of overtime hours that are not easily misconstrued or misinterpreted.
Do you believe this document adds value to a workplace, or does it create restrictions?

Please explain.
I do believe this document adds value to the workplace as it clearly communicates guidelines and
processes to employees. It offers a level of transparency that allows employees to thoroughly
understand what the work environment should be like. On the off chance that the work
environment is not functioning as the CBA says it should, employees have the agreement to
reference when expressing concerns or complaints to management.
