1. Do you agree or disagree with the author's assertions regarding
seasonal employees and cybersecurity risks in the work place? Why?
I agree that seasonal employees present a good increase in Cybersecurity
risk. It is provided with evidence that “companies experience a 20 percent
fraud increase over the holiday season...” (Bonderud et al., 2021)
Unfortunately with such a large increase in the amount of people, it is
almost certain that a percentage of the crowd, existing or new, are
potential threat actors. The mass onboarding of employees creates a good
amount of confusion for a short time and presents a plausibly easy means
for a threat actor to act.
2. What steps can (should) managers take to reduce security risks
associated with hiring seasonal or temporary employees? (Consider
whether or not the Secure Computer User training course would be
appropriate for these employees.)
Training is a key component to combating Cybersecurity risks.
Onboearding is the first form of training which any employee shall
receive, and by having a consistent onboarding practice a company can
establish a baseline of cyber training in the process. Formal training may
be a worthy investment, as providing training knocks out two birds with
one stone. “Happy, well-respected temporary workers are more likely to do
their jobs well in hopes of a full-time offer.” (Bonderud et al., 2021)
3. How can managers show leadership in the area of cybersecurity
defenses and best practices?
“Finally, managers should implement a few best practices to protect data
after temporary employees leave.” (Bonderud et al., 2021)
Managers can show leadership by following or establish a fundamental
ruleset as to how data is treating, and how employees are expected to
utilize a companys network. Additionally something to consider is a
‘practice what you preach’ model, where leadership is established by
managers exemplifying established best practices in their own every day
work methods.
