Watchman Style Policing
The Watchman Style of policing has the main focus of maintaining order and controlling
illegal or disruptive behavior (Dempsey, 2019). Essentially this type of policing would be more
focused on giving warnings rather than issuing arrests to keep the peace in these communities.
An example of this type of policing would be an officer coming upon some teenagers at a park
after dark. It is past curfew and they have vandalized some of the park structures. Rather than
arresting them all and issuing formal charges for curfew and vandalism they may use a ‘scare
tactic’ by issuing them a warning and threatening legal action if they are caught out past curfew
again.
