How the Criminal Justice System Works in the United
States
Law Enforcement The Court System
[Explain how law enforcement functions.
Answer the following questions:
There are three levels of law
enforcement: local, state, and
federal. Local law enforcement
includes police and sheriff
departments. State law
enforcement includes state or
highway patrol agencies. Federal
law enforcement includes
departments such as the F.B.I, the
U.S. Secret Service, Federal
Marshal Service, the Bureau of
Prisons, Customs and Border
Protection, Secret Service, and
Transportation Security
Administration, to name a few.
Local law enforcement, such as
police offi cers, have jurisdiction
over crimes within that city. State
law enforcement have authority
over state-wide crimes and state
roads. Federal law-enforcement
agencies have jurisdiction over all
levels of law enforcement as well
as federal level crimes.
Law enforcement officers are
given many opportunities to apply
discretion on the job. Some of
these include: whether or not to
make an arrest, whether or not to
pull their weapon, or using
excessive force to bring about an
arrest are just a few examples of
officers using discretion.
