The company I selected for my project and to research was Tesla, Inc. I am
beyond amazed by the different feats this company has accomplished, leading
to a genuinely innovative world and one superior in technology. Like him or not,
Elon Musk has changed the game immensely in terms of competition and has a
set standard for other companies. With that said, I believe with respect to CSR
and DEI, the company has made tremendous strides in these areas, which in part
has made them as successful as they are. So let's address a couple of questions:
1.) What is the company's position on DEI? Do they have a clear policy or
initiative around it? Yes, absolutely on the company website, we can find what
is called the U.S. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Report, which outlines, as the
company says, "the current state of our DEI position and actions we are taking to
engage with employees, candidates and community members, as we encourage
talented people from all backgrounds to join us on our mission to accelerate the
world's transition to sustainable energy. We look forward to sharing further
progress in future reports as we continue to innovate and enhance our diversity,
equity and inclusion practices" (Tesla, 2020).
2.) What actions could you take to ensure a diverse, inclusive, and equitable
project team is assembled? Take charge of the project myself by directly
appointing the people in charge to safeguard these initiatives and ensure they are
carried out efficiently and effectively. Hold high-quality standards and be
capable of holding individuals accountable for their actions, both positive and
negative. A well-structured team is like a well-oiled machine. If you take care of
it, it will take care of you.
3.) What is the company's commitment to CSR and how does it affect their
profitability or image in the market? Yes, the company has its annual impact
report, which lays out CSR standards. The following excerpt is from the latest
report and lays out the position the company takes on this issue. "Current
environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting does not measure the
scope of positive impact on the world. Instead, it focuses on measuring the
dollar value of risk / return" (Tesla, 2022).
4.) How does your product or service align with the company's CSR program,
and how can you leverage this position as a competitive tool? Again, this comes
back to the company and its mission statement, which in part says, "Tesla builds
not only all-electric vehicles but also infinitely scalable clean energy generation
and storage products. Tesla believes the faster the world stops relying on fossil
fuels and moves towards a zero-emission future, the better" (Tesla, 2022). This
reaffirms the company's commitment to the CSR framework, which only seems
to get better and better on a yearly basis.
