In the U.S., the government sets up rules and regulations for
businesses to follow to prevent them from causing harm to the
environment, labor, and consumers. There may seem to be a lot of
rules set on businesses, but I believe the regulations are set with
good intentions. Companies need to have rules because there have
been several cases where major corporations such as Enron, Tyco,
and WorldCom have committed fraud. It also helps society and our
environment in the long run. Some of the major government
regulations on businesses include employment and labor laws,
environmental regulations, and privacy. Employment and labor laws
are essential because it helps standard and overtime wages for all
employees. It also helps with workplace safety to protect workers
from severe or hazardous injuries. "The Family and Medical Leave
Act
(FMLA) requires employers with 50 or more employees to
provide 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to eligible
employees for the birth or adoption of a child, or for the serious
illness of the employee or a spouse, child, or parent"(Wood, 2020).
Environmental regulations protect our land, soil, water, and air.
Without environmental regulations would cause pollution to be out
of control and cause many wildlife to get sick and die off. It also
enforces companies to think about how they can help protect the
environment by going green, organic, and eco-friendly. Privacy laws
set rules to protect employees' personal information such as social
security number, name, health, and address. If businesses don't save
employees' personal information on a secure network, the data can
be stolen and used in identity theft. There need to be more
employment and labor laws regulations, specifically for businesses
that have sweat factories overseas. We still hear stories of
employees in sweatshops who are overworked and underpaid. There
have also been many stories of unsanitary working conditions and
unsafe work environments. I know that the rules and regulations may
be complex in some areas for startup companies or small businesses.
Still, I think that in the end, having rules and regulations protects us
and our environment in the long run and protects our future
generations as well.
