I do believe we have too much regulation on businesses. For
example, in an article titled "California Dumps a Trillion Gallon of
Fresh Water in Ocean – Declares Water Shortage", the writer
explains how a trillion gallons of freshwater have been dumped into
the ocean just to save a fish that is not even on the Endangered
species list. Meanwhile, the water was shut off to San Joaquin
Valley’s residents and farmlands leaving the unemployment at 40%
(telephoneengineerwarrington, 2017). When regulations cause
businesses to fail, families go hungry and destroy whole towns they
are no longer helping society and need to be done away with.
On the other side, we do need some regulations such as patent laws.
This gives businesses and inventors the peace of mind that if they
create something whether it is a product or a process; as long as they
take the steps to patent it then no one else can take their ideas and
use them as their own.
It is hard to say what industry needs more or even less regulation. As
someone who never wants to give the government more control
than absolutely necessary, I don't want to say they need any control,
after all they are supposed to be here to serve the people. However,
I do also understand that there are people out there who are just evil
and don't care about who they hurt as long as they make a profit. For
example, in the community I live in it is hard to believe but their
utilities were run by a private company back in 2017. And prior to
2017 there had been multiple sewage spills in neighborhoods.
Apparently, the management of the utilities was so bad that when
the latest spill was reported it took 3 hours and the police to get
them out there to clean it up (San Tan Valley Residents Angry over
Sewage Spill, 2018). Here more regulation or at least checks and
balances are needed to ensure waste companies are not being
reckless and spilling raw sewage into communities. I suppose it
comes down to public safety. Are our regulations hurting or helping
our communities.
