It can be dangerous for companies to make decisions with the long-
term goal in mind rather than what will make the most money for the
shareholders and management. I am proud of the way my employer
has taken a stand against injustice knowing that it may not be
favorably received by some people.
After the murder of George Floyd, they publicly denounced
discrimination of any kind and assured the employees that such
behavior, if it occurred, would not be tolerated and that everyone in
our company is valued and respected and should feel safe while
working. They gave everyone a day off as a floating holiday to give
everyone the opportunity to celebrate their holiday whatever it is.
When the Supreme Court determined that a woman’s choice to
terminate a pregnancy was not a constitutional right, my employer
immediately updated our group insurance to ensure everyone can
seek medical care in another state if the needed care is not available
in their home state. a
They spoke out against the senseless attacks on Asian and Pacific
Islander Americans and have always supported the LBGTQA+
community. a
It is more than just publicity and trying to gain favor from certain
groups. I know of two coworkers that were terminated because they
had been tormenting another coworker. Yes, adults acting like
playground bullies.
I have no doubt their support of all people, of all ethnicities, beliefs,
cultures, and choices have cost them some customers, but I choose to
believe that the practice of inclusion and diversity that is promoted
throughout the company, has increased the number of customers we
want to serve.
