Kingston Bryce Limited Kick Off
Kingston Bryce Limited was founded in 1983 by Brantley Kingston and Dan Bryce. The dining
room furniture company specializes in custom tables, chairs, fine China cabinets, coffee and wet
bars as well as other home furnishings that customers request. With 40 years of experience in the
industry, KBL has expanded their operations in the past by absorbing smaller, locally owned
cabinetry and woodworking organizations and has now been presented with the opportunity to
expand further by acquiring Home Interior Designs (H.I.D) Production and Trucking. With the
proven success record of KBL in their expansions, the acquisition of H.I.D will help to triple
KBL’s workforce, increase production and improve customer relations by reducing the amount of
time spent waiting for materials and shipping due to the number of trucks that will be absorbed
by KBL during the purchase.
H.I.D Production and Trucking
Home Interior Design Production and Trucking was founded in 2002 by husband-and-
wife team, Debbie and Greg Irwin. Their dream was to help homeowners redesign their homes
with high-quality materials at a lower cost, and to do this, they manufactured their own custom
furniture and reduced the cost of shipping by owning their own fleet of trucks. After 20 years in
business, Debbie and Greg are looking to retire and sell their company in order to keep it going
forward. The cross functional team will be working closely with H.I.D stakeholders and staff as
well as those for KBL to ensure a seamless transition into the new company.
Project Description
Through the use of project tracking and specialized cross-trained project management staff, KBL
will effectively and efficiently purchase HID Production and Trucking in order to expand their
market as well as triple their work force and increase profitability. The purpose of the project in
its simplest form is to create a seamless transition from two companies into one. The purchase of
HID Production and Trucking stands to be the largest purchase for KBL in their history and
leaves them in a unique place to not only manufacture their own custom dining room furniture,
but to absorb HID’s material production warehouses, as well as their shipping and trucking
divisions, which will save on the cost of freight for KBL. Using Gantt Charts for tracking
purposes, Profit and loss statements and other measures, KBL will be able to accurately track the
project at each step in the process to maintain timeliness and budget constraints.
Project Scope
KBL will be required to look at the scope of the project as well, including the limitations,
risks, and possible rewards of this project. While the budget for the project would seem high,
only $5 million has been allocated for this project, allowing for little exception or error. The
appraisals and valuation will be reviewed by the accounting and financial team in order to avoid
any bad appraisals or high-risk purchases of trucks, equipment or warehouses that may convey
with the sale. Finishing this project strong will allow KBL and HID Production and Trucking to
come together and become the leader in custom dining room furniture and woodworking.
Tasks & Milestones
Milestones are a major part of any project, regardless of the size of the project at hand. For KBL,
the milestones are comprehensive due to the size of the project and the organization that they are
acquiring. The fact that H.I.D has been in business for 20 years leaves more moving parts that
need to be accounted for, and more overhead cost that needs to be adjusted prior to and after
purchase in order to be sure that this is a good financial decision for both organizations. Despite
the 18-month timeline, schedule conflicts and delays in shipping have the possibility of causing
significant delays in the project execution, so it is important that the PM leaves some leeway for
this in the schedule.

Stakeholders
Key stakeholders in this project are those participating in the acquisition, including KBL CEO’s,
H.I.D CEO’s as well as the management team and those under them. The Board of Directors is
one of the primary stakeholders in a project such as this one. For this project, the stakeholders
are Dan Bryce, Brantley Kingston, Debbie and Greg Irwin, Valerie Brown (PM). These
stakeholders have the highest interest in the success of the project due to the high standing and
potential high loss for the company. Members of the management staff are stakeholders as well
as lower-level staff as these decisions affect their quality of life and employee morale. 061 The
customers of both companies are also stakeholders and are greatly impacted by these changes.
The stakeholders have different interests in the project and its tasks and budget, but all are
anticipating a successful outcome at the end of the 18-month timeframe allotted.

Conclusion
Kingston Bryce Limited has been presented with a unique opportunity to purchase a major
competitor in the custom woodworking field. HID Production and Trucking owners, Debbie and
Greg Irwin have decided to retire after twenty years and are selling the company. KBL has
allotted an 18-month timeline with a $5-million budget for this purchase to be overseen by
project manager, Valerie Brown. Using multiple tracking protocols, a specialized, cross-
functional team and a dedicated schedule of tasks and milestones, KBL will be able to complete
the sale on time and within the budget set forth. By absorbing the staff of HID Production and
Trucking as well as the equipment, trucking fleet and buildings owned by HID, KBL will be in a
better position to move forward with reinventing the merged companies into KBL Custom
Production and Design.
