Engaging the Soul of Youth Culture: Bridging Teen Worldviews and Christian Truth
Introduction
The book points out many of the battles that our youth faces today. It
starts out speaking of a young man who has issues holding normal conversations with
people. His entire life is bounded to cyber space and the only warmth he finds comes
from nameless, faceless strangers and not the home that he lives in. It was pretty cool
to see Mueller provide Gospel centered techniques to confront these issues that our
current youth culture is facing. This book gives parents and youth leaders the
opportunity to learn how to connect with students.

Engaging the Soul of Youth Culture, is written by Walt Mueller, founder
and president of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding. Mueller writes this book
to open the minds of not only youth leaders, but also the parents of the youth culture.
Mueller points out that the reason teens are turning to violence and other emotionally
violent behavior is because parents and the church body have failed to lay down a
biblical foundation for the youth. Mueller had many great quotes that really get into
the minds of the overseers of the youth. Mueller states “listening opens our eyes to the
reality and depth of the needs of young people. And once we know the reality, we can
communicate the gospel in ways that can be heard and understood”.1 This is an
important aspect. Communication is key. The next chapter Mueller follows up with
this, “Because those of us who work with young people have grown up in a different
world, we find it difficult to understand and relate to today’s youth. Thus, we must
approach our calling to work with young people as a cross-cultural venture”.2

Mueller gave a good insight to what our youth and the culture that surrounds it when
he gave a synopsis on the MTV’s VMAs on August 28, 2003. In summary of
Mueller’s response of the VMA’s, “…the reflection I saw tonight was not something I
liked. Nor was it an accurate reflection of me as an individual. But, collectively I
can’t argue with the fact that what I saw is a reflection of what our youth culture has
become and what our mainstream culture is becoming.”3 The book is capped off by
challenging pastors to get out of the office and onto the sidewalks and the living model
of Mars Hill ministry. The finishing point of the book was a good one and that these
changes in the way to do ministry is not a method but rather a model for living out
youth ministry.
Personal Response
Engaging the Soul of Youth Culture is not just another book on pop
culture, but it is a book with solidly biblical and theological attitudes that allows
Mueller to exhibit an understanding of his target audience. One of his targets is the
parents of teenagers. He writes to help them understand their children and the
postmodern, post-truth culture in which they are consumed. He also writes for youth
workers who work with parents in discipling their promised children. He also writes
for Christian educators who have regular contact with students in churches and
schools. Mueller might include preachers and pastors in the Christian educators’
category but in case he doesn’t, this a book for every pastor to read, even if his
ministry is only to senior citizens.

Mueller and I agree that the kind of discipleship that is needed with the rising
generation is transformational discipleship, which results in a kingdom lifestyle. We
also agree that with the rising interest in spirituality among the young people, we must
not necessarily equate that with true spirituality in the Christian sense, but we must
take advantage of that interest and seek to communicate the truth of the life changing
Gospel of Christ. Most adults do not have a clue as to what is going on just under the
surface in the life of most teens. Teens have questions, and many are clumsily trying to
voice those questions, but either we are not listening, or we are not answering their
questions. Mueller’s plea is that the church and home must start listening to the young
generation if we are committed to advancing the kingdom and reaching them with the
truth.
Quoting the late Francis Schaeffer, Mueller writes, “If we try to talk to our
young people before listening to their reality, we will only beat the air.”4 And the
tragedy is that most adults are not aware that they are not listening.
Because the church and home are often failing to fill the instructional void in
their lives, the media is stepping in a taking up the challenge. Unfortunately, that
message is often destructive and contrary to God’s reality. I read a stat recently that
basically eight out of ten baptized youth are exiting our churches soon after high
school graduation. The days of “if you build it, they will come” are coming to a close.
Churches on an average spend 4% of their operating budget in youth ministry. With

that low amount of investment, I think it is no wonder why the youth are leaving the
church in record numbers.5
Conclusion
This book is a book that should be in every youth pastor or youth
leaders’ hands. The book is full of great wisdom on the youth culture and innovative
ways to get involved. The ways are not new, they are actually ground level methods,
the same methods that Christ taught. The methods of relationship building, doing life
with each other, and investing in a few who then can duplicate. Youth ministry is not
rocket science, leaders just need to get out of their own way and listen to the Lord on
how he would train up today’s youth.
