In every culture there are influences, cultural norms, expectations, and expressions that
are demonstrated by a group of people, these people could be younger or older people among the
community. In this case study we look at the youth of Santa Fe and the issues they are dealing
with. The youth of this community is trying to find a way for them to not be led astray but to use
their creativity in a positive way by allowing them to legally paint graffiti on walls.
Local Youth Culture in Santa Fe
In the Santa Fe community, the youth is being influenced by art and their desire to be
seen and known. One of the painter from this community, Rose Simpson expresses that “some of
those young people out there painting their names huge on trains, on walls, in places, and they
step back and say, 'See how big I am and how colorful I am and how beautiful I am. I am
someone”.

The youth wants others to know what they can do and how creative they can be, they
want their art to be appreciated by the community and not seen as illegal.

to be able to do graffiti. Since being able to do graffiti, the youth of Santa Fe finds joy in doing
this. Moreover, they want for others to respect what they have do “Part of the respect is you don't
get painted over,”2 According to Simpson, when the graffiti is good work and not covered by
someone else is how respect is shown to the people who painted it.

By giving young people from this community more walls to paint in legally, it gives them
the freedom to let their creativity flow. In the article it tells us that some of the groups that create
graffiti are underground groups because not be scared that they might get in trouble if they get
caught. Allowing them have legal walls they can paint graffiti it keeps the youth from turning to

drugs, alcohol or violence. It allows these young people to show others in their community that
graffiti is a way of expressing their feelings, and set their time and energy in positive ways rather
than negative ways.
Moreover, allowing young people from the Fort Mercy Park community to learn more
about art and the different techniques so they can improve their art skills. Asking local artist to
teach art classes to those young people in the community who want get better at doing graffiti
would be beneficial since they are already “making sure that gang signs or gang stuff and swear
words are not used”5 and it will allow them to have more creativity with different techniques
that they can learn with these classes.
Additionally, give the opportunity to the best graffiti artists from Fort Mercy Park
community to paint a wall in which they are able to express the characteristics seen within the
community. By doing this it allows the community to realize that graffiti is a form of art that has
become quite common, especially because it allows young people to express their feelings and
let their creativity flow. Once the people from Fort Mercy Park community start seeing potential
in and admire what the youth does with graffiti, it would allow for them to have more walls
where they can paint legally.

Conclusion
There is a great need to build more relational connections with the youth in the
community of Fort Mercy Park. Once these connections are built it would allow for the strategies
listed above to become true. Also, it would give them the opportunity to be free and creative
when it comes to graffiti, especially if they are allowed to paint it on walls legally.

techniques, and give the opportunity to the best graffiti artist to paint a wall with what
characterizes the community.
By giving young people from this community more walls to paint in legally, it gives them
the freedom to let their creativity flow. In the article it tells us that some of the groups that create

drugs, alcohol or violence.
Once the people from Fort Mercy Park community start seeing potential

where they can paint legally.
Conclusion

community of Fort Mercy Park. Once these connections are built it would allow for the strategies
listed above to become true. Also, it would give them the opportunity to be free and creative
when it comes to graffiti, especially if they are allowed to paint it on walls legally.
