Introduction
Coach White had an interesting point of view, moving to McFarland. It was not at all
what he was used to coming from his previous high school. The culture of McFarland was utterly
different, and the kids were almost the opposite of what he had experienced previously. White
had to overcome many obstacles and cultural boundaries to reach the kids on a deeper level
finally. It was not easy to gain respect or build relationships, but he persisted and never gave up
on them.
Background of Culture
This community consisted of all Hispanics. Everyone in the community seemed to be
close-knit and knew everyone else. The kids of McFarland were impoverished. They had to work
for their parents just so that their parents could continue to provide for them. They would wake
up early and go out to the fields and then go to school after they would go straight back out to the
fields just so their parents could make more money. These kids were very hard-working, and they
were very driven. They got little to no rest most nights because they had to be up so early, but
they never complained. They did what was necessary to help their families survive. They were
not very open to outsiders because they were already established. The people of McFarland
seemed to have trust issues, especially with people of different ethnicities. They seemed to put up
a block because they were scared to get hurt by them. We see this when Coach White comes to
the school.
Coach White learning about McFarland
It was tough for Coach White to build relationships with the kids of McFarland. He did
not understand the background from which they came. These kids were hard-working, and he did
not understand the hard work that the boys did daily. One thing he did realize is that the boys of
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
McFarland were not meant to play football, and he realized how fast they were. For him to begin
building relationships with these kids, he first needed to understand where they came from and
their culture.
Building relationships
These kids did not build relationships through just time. Instead, they made relationships
based on Coach White, understanding what they went through daily. They also needed to trust
the coach before they built a relationship with him. He did many things in the movie to build a
relationship with these boys. He showed this first by going to Diaz's house to eat dinner with the
family when the boys quit the team. He was very respectful at their home so that he could gain
the parent's trust in hoping that boys would be allowed back on the team. He did not understand
that the boys had to quit to help their family stay afloat financially. So One of the first things he
did to understand and to show them he cared was he went to the fields with the boys to pick early
in the morning. He did not want the Diaz brothers to have to quit the team because they needed
to work. So he went and saw first hand what he needed to do to keep them on the team. He even
offered to continue working and came up with a plan so they could keep helping their family and
still be able to run. He showed the boys through this that he cared about them and that he wanted
to have a relationship with them.
Building relationships continued
They can also lose this trust they have built up very quickly. We almost see all the trust
lost when Coach White goes to visit Palo Alto. His top runner Thomas finds out that he visits
there and almost loses his trust and his relationship with White. Not only has Thomas built a
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
relationship with White, but he also has developed a relationship with Coach White’s daughter.
Coach White, however, assures him that he should run anyway in states, but he came very close
to losing everything, including his top runner in the biggest meet of the season. These kids just
needed dependable people in their lives that they could trust, and now that they were not going to
leave them or hurt them.
Conclusion
Coach White had a hard time at first understanding these kids and building relationships
with them. He did not start building good relations with the kids until he got his hands dirty and
started putting himself in their shoes. These kids began beginning to trust him because they saw
that he was willing to try to understand them and get to know them. He was not just another guy
who did not want a friendship with them, but instead, he wanted to be there for them and help
them in any way he could. He wanted to see them succeed in everything they did. Coach White
gave these kids hope and a future by merely being a cross country coach and investing in their
lives.

did to understand and to show them he cared was he went to the fields with the boys to pick early
in the morning. He did not want the Diaz brothers to have to quit the team because they needed
to work. So he went and saw first hand what he needed to do to keep them on the team. He even
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
offered to continue working and came up with a plan so they could keep helping their family and
still be able to run. He showed the boys through this that he cared about them and that he wanted
to have a relationship with them.

They can also lose this trust they have built up very quickly. We almost see all the trust
lost when Coach White goes to visit Palo Alto. His top runner Thomas finds out that he visits
there and almost loses his trust and his relationship with White. Not only has Thomas built a
relationship with White, but he also has developed a relationship with Coach White’s daughter.
Coach White
gave these kids hope and a future by merely being a cross country coach and investing in their
lives.

We see this when Coach White comes to
the school.

were very driven. They got little to no rest most nights because they had to be up so early, but
they never complained. They did what was necessary to help their families survive. They were
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
not very open to outsiders because they were already established.
One thing he did realize is that the boys of
McFarland were not meant to play football, and he realized how fast they were.
He even
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
offered to continue working and came up with a plan so they could keep helping their family and
still be able to run. He showed the boys through this that he cared about them and that he wanted
to have a relationship with them.
Building relationships continued
They can also lose this trust they have built up very quickly. We almost see all the trust
lost when Coach White goes to visit Palo Alto. His top runner Thomas finds out that he visits
there and almost loses his trust and his relationship with White. Not only has Thomas built a
relationship with White, but he also has developed a relationship with Coach White’s daughter.
Coach White
gave these kids hope and a future by merely being a cross country coach and investing in their
lives.

Coach White had an interesting point of view, moving to McFarland. It was not at all
what he was used to coming from his previous high school. The culture of McFarland was utterly
different, and the kids were almost the opposite of what he had experienced previously. White
had to overcome many obstacles and cultural boundaries to reach the kids on a deeper level
finally. It was not easy to gain respect or build relationships, but he persisted and never gave up
on them.

Coach White
gave these kids hope and a future by merely being a cross country coach and investing in their
lives.
They were
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
not very open to outsiders because they were already established.
One thing he did realize is that the boys of
McFarland were not meant to play football, and he realized how fast they were.
He even
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
offered to continue working and came up with a plan so they could keep helping their family and
still be able to run.
Coach White, however, assures him that he should run anyway in states, but he came very close
to losing everything, including his top runner in the biggest meet of the season. These kids just
needed dependable people in their lives that they could trust, and now that they were not going to
leave them or hurt them.

the coach before they built a relationship with him.
Not only has Thomas built a
relationship with White, but he also has developed a relationship with Coach White’s daughter.

Coach White
gave these kids hope and a future by merely being a cross country coach and investing in their
lives.
They were
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
not very open to outsiders because they were already established. The people of McFarland
seemed to have trust issues, especially with people of different ethnicities. They seemed to put up
a block because they were scared to get hurt by them. We see this when Coach White comes to
the school.

One thing he did realize is that the boys of
McFarland were not meant to play football, and he realized how fast they were. For him to begin
building relationships with these kids, he first needed to understand where they came from and
their culture.
Building relationships
These kids did not build relationships through just time. Instead, they made relationships
based on Coach White, understanding what they went through daily. They also needed to trust
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
the coach before they built a relationship with him.
Not only has Thomas built a
relationship with White, but he also has developed a relationship with Coach White’s daughter.

Coach White
gave these kids hope and a future by merely being a cross country coach and investing in their
lives.
Coach White had an interesting point of view, moving to McFarland. It was not at all
what he was used to coming from his previous high school. The culture of McFarland was utterly
different, and the kids were almost the opposite of what he had experienced previously. White
had to overcome many obstacles and cultural boundaries to reach the kids on a deeper level
finally. It was not easy to gain respect or build relationships, but he persisted and never gave up
on them.

relationship with White, but he also has developed a relationship with Coach White’s daughter.
Coach White
gave these kids hope and a future by merely being a cross country coach and investing in their
lives.

One thing he did realize is that the boys of
McFarland were not meant to play football, and he realized how fast they were. For him to begin
building relationships with these kids, he first needed to understand where they came from and
their culture.
Building relationships
These kids did not build relationships through just time. Instead, they made relationships
based on Coach White, understanding what they went through daily. They also needed to trust
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
the coach before they built a relationship with him.
Not only has Thomas built a

building relationships with these kids, he first needed to understand where they came from and
their culture.
His top runner Thomas finds out that he visits
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
there and almost loses his trust and his relationship with White. Not only has Thomas built a
relationship with White, but he also has developed a relationship with Coach White’s daughter.
Coach White
gave these kids hope and a future by merely being a cross country coach and investing in their
lives.

We see this when Coach White comes to
the school.

different, and the kids were almost the opposite of what he had experienced previously. White
had to overcome many obstacles and cultural boundaries to reach the kids on a deeper level
These kids were hard-working, and he did
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
not understand the hard work that the boys did daily. One thing he did realize is that the boys of
McFarland were not meant to play football, and he realized how fast they were.
His top runner Thomas finds out that he visits
lOMoARcPSD|62176900
there and almost loses his trust and his relationship with White. Not only has Thomas built a
relationship with White, but he also has developed a relationship with Coach White’s daughter.
Coach White
gave these kids hope and a future by merely being a cross country coach and investing in their
lives.
