Introduction
Every group of youth has influences, cultural norms, expectations, and expressions that are
demonstrated by that group of people. Culture whether we can tell or see it affects everyone and
shapes who people are. The youth in Hong Kong are no different they are shaped by social unrest,
govermental stress from protests and just normal social and familial pressures.
Influences on youth in Hong Kong
The youth in Hong Kong are influenced by Social unrest, civil disobedience and societal
pressures. While regualar teens are worried about school friends and preparing for college we see in
Hong Kong students are protesting against communist agenda and in favor of democratic systems and
bettering their education systems. Socitel pressures such as communism even directly affect the
education of students and the individual suffrage rights for them. Teenagers not standing by injustice
because it is the social norm and using civil disobedience is an aspect and driving force to equality and
justice even if the issue isnt resolved in the moment. Teens in Hong Kong also are highly influenced
by governments control of individual actions aswell as speech. Students just speaking out for change
has lead to imprisonment or worst. Students and teens have made it their individual responsibility and
duty to stand up for those too afraid or unable to do so.
Youth Reactions
The Youth in Hong Kong have definity not exhibited a “Laissez-faire” or hands off or detached
approach to the injustices they are facing. Youths in Hong Kong have demonstrated major protests
That have caught lots of attentions from its wide spred support. For example Joshua Wong gathered many
youth to join along side him in protest. This wasnt a small school club rather a wide spread social
Justice movement for the right of universal suffrage for all. Wong gathered 120,000 protestors comprised of
peers and other citizens and even 13 of which who hunger striked. The youth in Hong Kong realized
they did infact have influence in their community. The government became fearful and confused on
How just shortly before students wouldnt even though twice in retaliation or going against the government
while now students are publicly protesting and speaking out against the placement of a “National
Curriculum” in which controlled the education system and pushing the communist party’s agenda.
Youth Workers
If I where a global worker I would want to have a firm understanding on what effects youth in Hong
Kong. More specifically what are their motivating and influencing factors. I believe the most important
Things for a youth worker in this context to understand is rising political tensions which affect students,
Restriction is nationalized education system and civil unrest which is followed by civil disobediednce to
Youth obligation to protest and stand up for themselves and communities. I think this is important to
understand as when working with youth you have to understand what is important to them and what
Influences their morals. In Hong Kong there is alot of tension between the government and citizens and
the struggle in power dynamics and free speech would be important to know. If I where a youth I would
want to understand the things that are pressing and important to the hearts to my students.
Conclusion
The youth in Hong Kong have a very unique drive and compassion for justice. The search for love
Justice and equality are all a concepts in which are pleasing to God. I believe if students aren't guided
in their attempts to find fulfillment and justice they will search and turn to a broken world and will lead
them astray. We serve a God of justice, mercy and love. It would be critical to partner and empower
students in their path to seeking justice and equality.
