Chapter 5 Reflection
Being in leadership is a very important position no matter any aspect. However, in
church, it is a heavy burden that most people do not understand. This why it is so important to
make sure that you are called into that ministry before stepping into any position but especially a
leader. Leadership comes from calling, competence, confidence and character. Misled leadership
is exactly what caused the door to my childhood church to close. It was a small church with
maybe fifty to seventy people on a Sunday morning. Our pastor left for medical reason and they
voted in another pastor. This said pastor came from a medium size church that had an attendance
of well over 200 people every service. He came into this position wanted everyone to
accommodate his way of leadership when in reality he was the one that needed to change his
perspective of being a leader. He wanted us to have the mindset of a medium size church when
we were clearly a small church. In no way is this any fault of his however, it was a lesson
learned. I think my biggest issue with leadership in a larger church is the fact that there is no
relational point of view for the leadership. I personally like to know that my pastor is practicing
what he preaches. How can we lead according to God if we are not following His Will. We can
see from examples in the Bible that Biblical leadership is servant-leadership. Jesus was the
ultimate leader, yet He never held himself to a higher standard. Just as Jesus washed the feet of
His disciples, we should also wash the feet of others. In other words, we should do what we
would want others to do. This led me to questions myself. What kind of leader am I? Do I set an
example to my youth that I should? Leadership is not about position, privilege, or power but
about serving others. As a leader I would not ask my youth to do something or exempt something
from their life that I, myself, would not do. The goal in leadership is to point towards God. We
are criticized and watched more closely in our walk with God when leadership is in question. If

something is questionable, the first thing I ask is it something that would direct someone or point
the situation towards God. I pray that I never fail to lead by example and that I never lead anyone
astray because of something I have done or said.
