Worship Study Devotional Assignment: Public and Private Worship
Elena Solis
WRSP 101: Introduction to Worship Studies

Topic: Public and Private Worship
Scripture:
“But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who
is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6 New
American Standard Bible)
“I will tell of Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.” (Psalm
22:22 New American Standard Bible)
Narrative:
When I first became a Christian, I realized how important worship is. Worship is to exalt the
Lord who created everything and to humble ourselves while worshiping. To me, worship was
only on Sundays or on any church gathering, where the worship leaders sing on the stage, and I
am in the congregation singing with other believers. Then I would go back to my normal week
and could not wait to go back to church to sing praises again. Until one service, the preacher
was talking about personal and private worship. I thought it strange at first, but then quickly
realized how important private devotion to God and worshiping alone is. Public and private
worship go hand-in-hand when striving for a closer relationship to the Lord.
Teaching Point:
Public worship is with other believers singing praises to God and showing everyone that
you are a follower of Him. While private worship is you alone, reflecting and meditating on
what God has done in your own life. With private worship there is no distractions, it is just
between you and the Lord. Jesus teaches us that when we pray we must go into our rooms where
there is no one around looking at you pray and worshiping your Father. During this time of
solidarity, there is more time to talk to God one on one and meditate on His Word. We are not
2
meant to only live our faith publicly but also privately. This shows that we are intentionally
taking time from our schedule and purposefully going to God by ourselves. Its easy to want to
go to church and be there for the community or the teachings, but you only get that once a week
and don’t feel fully satisfied. When we continue to worship God throughout our week, we
continually get poured into and poured out. This shows God that we are purposely taking time to
spend with and going to Him during our busy weeks.
Public worship is also important as we are not meant to worship just on our own. With
other believers around us, it is all one big song of praise to the Lord that gives Him glory. There
is strength in coming together to worship, as John F. MacArthur said, “As the saints come
together to worship the Lord, they become stronger both collectively and individually, and a
transformation takes place”(MacArthur 15). God brings transformation when there are other
believers around and shows how He moves through His people. Public worship is also a
testimony to those around you. Showing others your devotion to the Lord and praising Him with
all your heart, shows unbelievers the transformation God has made in your life.
Application:
Reflect on the song Monday Morning Faith by SEU Worship, Chelsea Plank. Then ask
God to help you answer the following questions:
•How can you take time out of your schedule to worship God in private?
•Are you worshipping the Lord for yourself and the attention of others or, are you
sincerely worshiping Him with your heart?
•Why is it important to worship God outside of a church setting and worship the Lord?
Response Song: “Monday Morning Faith”
3
I want to meet with you more than Sundays
I want to know more than just my mother's faith
'Cause that's not enough to get through the rough
Oh, I need a Monday morning faith
I want to hear you in more than just one way
Show your voice in all of the mundane things
You're in the in-between
You're in my everything
And that's all I really need
My soul sings in the morning
I love the King and he loves me
And all that I'm compelled to bring
Is my everyday offering
Let my worship be more than just singing When
did music become a religious thing?
Let these songs be what thеy're meant to be
Thе sound of your church awakening
And help my heart to keep up with the heavens
Where the angels sing 24/7 praise
You're more than enough to get through my rough
You're teaching me Monday morning faith
And that's all I really need
My soul sings in the morning
I love the King and he loves me
And all that I'm compelled to bring
Is my everyday offering
Your mercy's new - your mercy's new every morning
I come alive as you're calling
And all that I'm compelled to bring
Is my everyday offering
And Hell's not scared of a Sunday faith
If it only leads to empty praise
What really makes darkness run
Is when the saints arise and praise in quiet
On Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday
To know you, to love you, to choose you first
Thursday and Friday and Saturday
To see you, behold you in worship, singing
Hallelujah, holy, holy
Glory to the King of Kings
And hallelujah, holy, holy
All honor and glory belongs to you
And my soul sings in the morning
I love the King and he loves me
And all that I'm compelled to bring
4
Is my everyday offering
Your mercy's new every morning
I come alive as You're calling
And all that I'm compelled to bring
Is my everyday offering
