Introduction
One of the question that is often asked by most moderators to politicians when running for the
office of the president of the United State is to clarify where politicians stand with voters on the issue of
abortion: Pro-Life or Pro-choice. It will be surprising watching a presidential debate where the two
leading candidates (democrat or republican) are never ask if they support abortion or not. For example,
in 2016, during a Thursday night debate, former Pennsylvania senator, Rick Santorum who was at that
time the front running for winning the Republican primary was put on the spot to defend his stand on
abortion after being asked by one of the moderator as to why he did not attend the “March for Life” that
was held in Washington, D.C. at that time, and this was his response: “Twice in my life we were
counseled to have an abortion — once with our son Gabriel and one with our little girl, Bella,” Santorum
said. “Neither time did Karen (Santorum’s wife) and I even think about (having an abortion), because we
know life begins at conception” (Bolten Kathy, 2016).
It seems every time politicians run for office, this is one question that is inevitable and must be
answer if they are to gain the public trust on where they stand on the issue of abortion. They own the
public a response as to why they support abortion or why they do not support abortion. From the look
of thing, and with too many opinions pertaining to the debate of abortion (in favor or against) it is not
likely that this topic during presidential debate will go away soon. With society keeps changing, and
science keeps improving, it does not look like the debate of abortion is likely to go away anytime soon,
but will remain a continue process for discussion.
Since the legalization of abortion (Roe v. Wade) in the United State by the Supreme Court in
1973, there have been many disagreement mostly by religions groups, consecutive politicians, and other
non-profit organizations concerning women’s reproductive right to murder unborn babies. Which leaves
one with this question, “Is abortion a sin or not?” And “what does the Bible say about those who
commits such act?” With many forming their own conclusion as to how they perceived abortion by
looking at it from a secular or religion prospective, this paper will address why the author believes
abortion is sin and why God hates the hands that share innocent blood from a biblical prospective. The
author will start by giving a brief history about abortion in the U.S., expand on movement that contribute
to the wild spread of abortion clinics in the U.S, explain how the world (secular society) views abortion,
compare to God’s view of abortion, and explain why the Bible is the standard for Christian’s world view.
The History of Abortion
Before going further into the topic being discuss, it is prudent that the term “abortion” first be
define. What is abortion? Abortion is define as “the removal or expulsion of an embryo or fetus from the
uterus, resulting in, or caused by its death.”(Iran J Psychiatry, 2011). When a female commits abortion,
she removes a living organism from within her. The living organism that is removed from within the
female, is consider as human in the eyes of God, regardless if all agree or not. He told the Jeremiah, “I
knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and
appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5). Jeremiah was ordained and appointed by
God before his conception in the womb.
3
This leads to the question, when does life begin? According to God’s standard of living (The
Bible), life begins in the womb of a woman, and not outside the womb (Jer 1:5). One of the first lesson
that is taught in elementary science is that “life” (living thing) is anything that eats, grows and moves.
When a female is pregnant, being it 3 weeks or more, her body goes through changes that displace a
living organism is inside the stomach of the woman. You may notice that the woman now eats more than
she was previous eating, because the living organism inside of her needs to eat. She now also experience
changes within her body regardless of the stage she contemplates in committing the abortion. Her
stomach might increase in size, because the baby inside of her needs to grow and he or she might even
kick the mother to let her know that there is life inside the stomach. Regardless of all of these evidences
there are some (liberals) who believe that abortion is not a sin, because according to them life is not
conceive in the womb, but outside of the womb.
The origin
The topic of abortion is not a new debate to humanity. Everything that exits in the universe
today has an origin. Although there is no definite time that can be pain point as to when the history of
abortion begins in the United States; nevertheless, abortion was practice in the United States as far back
to colonial America (Dine Ranana). According to historians, the official abortion law in the U.S. did not
appear on record until 1821. Prior to this time, women were allowed to perform abortion without
repercussions until the law of quickening (when movement of the baby is first experience by the mother)
became effective. Quickening, which could range from 14 weeks up to 26 weeks during pregnancy before
the woman could experience movement of the baby (Dine Ranana). Before quickening became illegal in
1860, abortion was never illegal, and was practice by midwives and doctors as far back to the uprising of
this great country in colonial America. When quickening was put into place, women were restricted from
having abortion freely, and whenever they want; however, there was few exceptions like when a girl is
rape or mother’s health is at danger during the pregnancy (Rananan). For example, in the Islamic state of
Sudan, abortion is consider a crime, except when performed to save the pregnant woman’s life (Liv
tonnessen and samia).
Today, in the United States, much of what people know about the debate of abortion comes
from the case of Sarah Grosvenor in 18th-century America. When quickening was finally declare illegal in
colonial America in 1860, Sarah Grosvenor who lives in Connecticut at that time seeks a late-term
abortion from Dr. John Hallowell in 1742. Unfortunately, the abortion took her life because she ended up
dying from complications 10 days after the operation due to infection (Cornelia Hughes, Dayton). Prior to
Sarah seeking Dr. Hallowell’s assistance for abortion, she first attempted to abort her baby by taking
abortifacient, due to lack of interest in her from her lover Amasa Session, as stated by historians. The use
of abortifacient, which was common for women to use at that time to perform abortion was
unsuccessful and Sarah ended up seeking Dr. Hallowell’s assistance where she ended up dying. Since the
abortion was illegal, because it was done after quickening. Dr. Hallowell was brought to the court for
murdering Sarah and her baby, however, the case resulted in a misadmonier charge against Dr. Hallowell,
and Sarah and her baby death were never acknowledged by the court as murder (Breslaw, Elaine
G. Lotions, Potions, Pills, and Magic). However, somewhere within that time until 1973, abortion was ban
in America for almost 100 years prior to Roe v. Wade.
Roe v. Wade
4
Roe v. Wade was the landslide case that change the face of America’s abortion law. In 1973 the
Supreme Court of the United States declared abortion legal in all 50 states. “The Court ruling declared
that all women had the right to terminate a pregnancy until the fetus was viable outside the womb”
(Rananan Dine). This for the first time in almost a century the highest court of the land chose to define
God’s standard of ethics. The court decides to call what God called evil good, and see what they called
good to be evil in God’s eyes.
Although, the Supreme Court of America has made up her mind in deciding not to stand alone
side with what God stands for, nevertheless, no sins goes unpunished for being ignore. Scripture states,
“Righteousness exalt a nation but sins is a reproach to many people.” The statistics of evil can never be
hidden just because a nation or select group of people chose to ignore evil (abortion). Evil is evil,
regardless if humanity chosen to play ignorant.
John Donne states, “No man is an island” And neither does man lights a light and put it under
the bushes and expect it not to give light” (Matt 5). He should expect that light to shine and there is
nothing he can do to stop that light from shinning. America cannot kill all these innocent babies and
does not expect the consequences from God in return. “The soul that sin shall die” (quote). The United
States and every other nations that approve abortion are at risk of getting the wreath of God, and need
to repent, very soon if they are not willing to experience that wrath. The killing of the innocent babies is
not something that God approves off and should go unnoticed. God hears the cries of the innocent and
always shows up to their rescue (exos 2:25).
The statistic
Every year millions of babies are murdered in the U.S. from abortion. To reiterate, abortions is
the killing of the innocent and live does not begins outside the womb, but inside the womb. “Before the
foundation of the world I knew you” (Insert quote). God knew every baby that was aborted, is being
aborted now or will be aborted in the future before the mother could even think of doing such act. He
sees a thousand miles ahead before His creations, and He knows the thought in their heart (quote). God
is the master planner and He plans the destinies of those babies that are being destroy by the evil policy
of abortion.
For over 47 years, the Supreme Court in the U.S. had gotten it wrong by approving evil, yet up to
now has failed to make it right. For decades the court has been run by mostly majority liberal judges who
lacked the fear of God, and who put themselves in the position of God by approving evil policy that
determines who should live and who should not, which to God, is sin, because only Him is worthy to
determines such standard. Since Roe v. Wade (1973) up to 2018, there have been 61.8 million+ babies
aborted in the U. S. (All American Life League, 2020), which in counting when combine is equivalent to
the population of Montana (1 million), Maine (1.3 million), Rhoda Island, New York (19 million) and
California (39 million) (US States - Ranked by Population 2020).
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 186 babies are aborted at birth, to every
1,000 baby that live. A private research conducted by Guttmacher Institute on abortion displayed, on a
given day, 2,362+ babies are aborted each day, and 1 baby are aborted every 96 seconds, with California
and New York being the two states with the most abortion (ALL). African American women, followed by
Caucasian women are accounted for most of the abortion done. In 2016, according to the CDC, 38% of
black women, 35% of White women, 18.8% of Hispanic Women and 8.2% of other race were accounted
5
for abortion done in that year. 92% of abortion were perforemed at less than 13 weeks, 6% at 14-20, and
1% were performed at 21 week or higher (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).
The Eugenic Movement and Abortion
What people do not understand as to why the fight for abortion to remain legal can be
traced back to a demonic movement that started in Europe by one of the world evil detector
called Aldus Hitler. The word “Eugenics” comes from the Greek roots for “good” and “origin,”
or “good birth” and involves applying principles of genetics and heredity for the purpose of
improving the human race” (Laura Rivard, 2014). Hitler who was the leader of West Germany at
that time believe there was certain race, like the German, English, and those of the Scandalian
that his people need to copy off or get into intermarriage in order to be successful. He believed
that certain raced, such as the Jewish and those of the Amazon should be eliminated because He
considered them to be inferiors. Where as in the United States, “the attack on abortion access
were rooted in racism and white supremacy.” (Baker Carrie).
Founded in the U.S as its aim of eliminating negative traits. The eugenic movement
quickly focus on eliminating certain race (African American) from their culture in the 1800.
Concern about the decline in birthrate among white women, the U.S. movement and the eugenic
movement became concern about the “race suicide”, fearing that the inferior race might
supersedes the white race, and wanted more white protestant women to have more children; they
begin to use sterilization as mean of depopulating those they considered (mainly African
American) as the inferior race (Baker Carrie). The eugenics movement focused on eliminating
undesirable traits associated with poor, uneducated, African American were their primary target.
“In an attempt to prevent these groups from propagating, eugenicists helped drive
legislation for their forced sterilization” (Laura Rivard), which eventually lead to a higher
increase in women and women of colors aborting their babies. This is what sin does, sin
promotes legislations that go against God’s standards. Just as eugenic was used to select which
individual live or die, abortion is the same, because the person in power (the mother and now the
government in New York) has the option to select when, how and why she believes if a baby
should live or die. And this is sin!
The world’s view on Abortion
As a Christian, always expect the world to have a different opinions about where they
stand when it comes to abortion. “You are in the world but not of the world” (quote). Just
because you live in this world, does not mean everyone that you come across will have the same
beliefs and world view that you have, it is impossible! In fact, it is difficulty living for Christ
right now than it was four decades ago. Your world view as a Christian determines how you
judge ethical decisions. Many people today have difficulty applying ethical decision because
they lack a biblical world view. What make you different from the world as Christian is that you
carry a perspective that sees everything should be judge from God’s perspective, and not man.
“In the United States, there are three main positions on abortion: pro-life, pro-choice, and
the muddled-middle” (Bellinger). The liberals (pro-choice) see the fight for abortion as an
6
infringement on women’s reproductive right, and believe that a fetus does not full have the
personhood of a human and should therefore be consider as one (Jones, Michael). There is no
argument that the world is changing and so do people and culture. However, one thing does not
change, and that is the word of God. “The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our
God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8 NIV). Just because cultural is changing that does not mean God
stands on abortion is changing. He always remain truthful to His words, which is abortion is a
sin. The liberal can chose to ignore this as a sin, but God does not.
One main argument for the fight for abortion from the pro-choice group is the freedom of
emancipation. They believe that “the enlightenment and the development of modern science have
free human beings from the shackles of blind religious dogmatism” (Bellinger). Which is not
true. From the beginning of creation, humanity has always been free, so how can one be
oppressed when he has always been free? It called choice.
In Genesis (the beginning) Chapter 1, when man was created, man was given freedom to
rule over the earth, and every creeping things, and what caused man to lose that authority was
sin. But man was never oppressed by God in the first place. So the argument present by the pro-
choice camp for mankind emancipation is unessential to this argument.
Pro-life
Unlike the pro-choice group, the pro-life movement advocates for the lives of the
innocents. Christians Right group raise billions of dollar to support conservative candidates and
legislators that promote their religious views of saving lives (Mary Ann Castle). They advocate
for a platform that believes that “life’ is precious by God, and every lives matter to God and
should therefore be given a chance to leave their marks on the face of the earth. They accept the
fact that the fetus is human and should as should be given the fact to live (Jones, Micahel).
Although research strongly demonstrates religious factors as important element in
determining the public’s attitude toward abortion (Ben Clements), the pro-life moment main goal
is in advocating for the “unborn”, so therefore, they are willing to use any means necessary in
obtaining that objective to save lives. Conservative foundation and conglomerates such as The
Heritage Foundation, Foucs on the Family, Fox news etc., undertake major research project that
promotes anti-abortion messages to the masses (Mary Castle).
Even though from the two choices listed above, it would be wise for one to come to a
conclusion that those who support pro-choice are secular liberals who wants abortion to remain
legalize, while those who want it to be criminalize are consecutives pro-life advoce with strong
religious background who are pushing for the right thing to be done. However, It is true that one
can argue that not everyone who supports abortion right is “secular” and everyone who supports
the pro-life position is “religious” (Bellinger, Charles K). Which is not true, there are those
(muddled-middle) who are support abortion but are not secular. But how does God see it is far
more important than how liberals and Consecutives see it.
The Bible as God’s standard
7
The Holy Bible is the errant, meaning it is truthful and there is no errors (Erikcson). The
word of God is authoritative, powerful, and the standard for everyday living. For a Christian, to
every decision that pertains to ethics, the Bible is the only source that provides the best
information and the best decision that must be taken. What is ethics? Ethics which is derived
from the Greek word ethos, meaning custom, habit, character or disposition, (bbc.uk/ethics,
2014), is used to determine how one makes decision. According to the Merriam-Webster
dictionary, ethics is “the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and
obligation.” As Christian, your ethics will determine what you believe and the kind of policy you
are going to vote for. Nevertheless, Christian’s ethics should always be based on God’s definition
of ethics, and not their opinions.
How does God determine ethics? To most Christians, abortion is a sin because according
to God’s rule of judging ethics, which is the Bible, any hands that share innocent blood is a sin
(Proverb 6:17). And because sin is the transgression of God’s law (1 John 3:4), those who
approve such act are guilty of sinner as well compare to the one who is committing the murder.
The world does not see abortion as sin because they do not know God (John 14:17), and
therefore cannot judge according to His standard of ethics. Moreover, the contemporary society
tends to be a worldlier rather than a spiritual one; they pay less respect to the human value given
God and by the Church of Jesus Christ (Adrian Paul). Since the world do not know God like the
Christians do, Christians should be an example of God’s light to the world and do not approve
policy that kill the innocent. A Christians who is truly saved will never vote for a policy
(abortion) that approve what God disapproved.
Even though, there have been some notion that Christians speak with one voice when it
comes to taking an ethical stand on abortion, this however is far from the true. There is
disagreement with abortion. There have been Christians who have voted for evil policy on
abortion. For years, there have been both opposition and toleration for abortion in the Christians’
cycle (Jones, Michael). A famous example is St. Augustine (345-430). Being a strong anti-
abortionist and a man with a strong Christian’s ethics, Augustine opposed abortion to some as
murder, but to some degree. However, he believed that abortion during the first trimester is not
considered murder, because according to him during this time the fetus is not a person (Jone,
Micahel).
It is God who determines what is ethical and not man. For every ethical decision that
happens, God sets the standard for humanity and not the other way around. “Christian positions
on abortion should be influence by scriptural considerations, theological doctrines, and
philosophical presuppositions”, and not men’s opinions because God will judge every idle words
that man utter (Matthew 12:36).
God’s view on abortion
Genesis 1 states God as the creator of the universal and humanity. Since God is the
creator of the universal and humanity, He is therefore the giver of life and only Him should be
allow to take life. "Your hands shaped me and formed me. Will you now turn and destroy me?
(HCSB Job 10:8). God’s view on abortion is that it is wrong and He disapproved those who
8
practice such act. During the early development of the “Christian Church, three sins were
considered to be the most terrible-apostasy, (rejecting the belief), murder, and adultery
(immorality)-abortion is the most severe sin as it represents a fusion of the first three. Abortion is
at the same time a rejection of belief, endlessly immoral and-even more so-abortion is murder.”
(Adria Paul). Among the six sins that God hates, abortion is among one of them. These six things
doth the Lord hate: yea, are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands
that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in
running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among
brethren. such act. Abortionists are condemned for hell, except they repent (Proverbs 6:16-19).
Life is precious and value by God. He established life in the beginning and He is the
giver of life. God is pro-life because He gives life and does not take away life. “And the Lord
breath into their nostril the breathe of life, and man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7). “For
you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. My frame was not
hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depts.
Of the earth your eyes saw my unformed body… (Psalm 139:13-14). The life man breathes is not
theirs, but God, therefore does not give them the audacity to take it away.
God’s original plan for humanity was for mankind to multiply and not to be destroy. In
Genesis, He told Adam, “Be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28). He is against murder and in
Exodus when the law (Ten Commandments) was given He instructed the children of Israel to not
kill. “Thou shall not Kill” (Exodus 20:13). Meanwhile, abortion on the other hand is the
massacre of the innocent and infringement upon their right to life. Life is a gift that is offer freely
by God and must be appreciated with joy, love, and gratitude by humanity (Andian Paul). “it
must be cherished, kept and protected as the most sublime expression of God’s creative activity”
(Andria Paul). Since, God is the giver of all lives, only He should be given the right to take life
away.
The Consequences of abortion
To every decision in life, being it good or bad, there is always a consequences. There are
good consequences and there are bad consequences. When Lucifer rebelled against God in
Heaven, he paid the price by being kicked out of Heaven. Also, there was a consequences Adam
and Eve had to pay by failing to yield to God’s advice by eating the fruit they were forbidden not
to eat of in the Garden of Eden. Likewise, there is also a consequences for those who commit
abortion.
Living in a society where mankind have become so evil by openly declaring themselves a
self-government that removes God from the picture totally and given man the power to taken
away life effect nothing worse than the family. God’s plans for mankind is for the family to
expand and not to decrease: He told Adam, the first family ever crated to be, “Be fruitful and
multiply” (Genesis 1:28). The family, which is and up to now remains the foundations of the
human race, (Adrian P) is harmed when the plan of abortion is implemented instead of God’s
plan. Abortion prevent the family from obeying God’s commandment of multiplication. The
9
family which has been created by God since the beginning for promoting life and gifted by Jesus
Christ, whose mission is to repair the world is today a victim of moral degradation like abortion.
Another consequences to abortion is the harm it caused to the economy. Abortion is not
free, it cost money for a person to commit murder (which to liberals is legal). The consequences
of the United States approving abortion is that money that need to go into good used like funding
schools, roads, improving infrastructures etc., to boast the economy are being used to fund
abortion’s clinics. Every year, billions of taxes payer money go into waste to fund this evil
policy. According to research conducted in 2019, currently there are over 587 abortion clinic
(plan parenthood) that are currently in existence within the U.S. (ALL), and last year alone, the
government spend $1.63 billion dollar in tax’s payers money to fund and run this organization
(ALL). Since the U.S. refused to listen to God, she is always going to pay the price, because
“righteousness exalt a nation but sin is reproach to any people”.
A third consequences of abortion is that it brings psychological effect (mostly to females)
to those who commit such act. Most female who commits abortions suffer from depression, and
worry about not being able to conceive again (Iran Psychiatry). Abnormal eating behaviors,
decrease in self-esteem, nightmare, guilt, smoking, alcoholism, self-destructive behaviors and
evern suicide and regret are reported as psychological factor to women who experienced abortion
(Iran psychiatiry). Also, abortion has been known as a main cause of maternal mortality, life
threatening complications such as hemorrhage, fever, infection and death. (Iran Psychiatiry).
Furthermore, because God views abortion as sin, it can also affect the person spiritually walk
with God: Who ever kill shall be guilty of a crime.
Conclusion
There is a history to abortion than what people see today. The discussion of abortion is
not new to the continent of America. Abortion has been practiced in America since colonial time
and is still being practice today. Throughout history abortion has been practice legal or leagal,
until finally being declare legal by the United States Supreme Court in 1973 (Roe v. Wade).
Regardless of where one stands on the topic, democrat (liberal) or republican (consecutive),
abortion is sin according to God’s word. God’s standard of judging ethics is not based on the
standard of society but on His word. His word is authentic, and no one can go wrong who seeks
to define what is ethical or not when they seek his word. Although, some might have several
reasons in justify why they believed abortion should be legalize, but in the end, it comes down to
one word, sin.
Apart from abortion being a sin, it also affects the family, economy and the woman
psychologically, those who commit such act psychologically. Research has proven depression,
guilt, suicide, etc., as some of the common factors of the psychological effect of abortion on the
mother. Abortions is sin, and sin is anything that transgress the law of God. Because God is so
holy, he cannot associate with sin or anyone who participates in sin. Those who approve abortion
will be judge by God if they do not repent. In conclusion, abortion is a sin because God’s
condemned those who commit such act as murder.
