Critical Reflection: Work, Technology, and Society Assignment
Randy Gilreath
THEO310: Theology of Humanity
September 23, 2024
Brief Summary
Cortez: Chapter 5
In chapter five, Cortez briefly recaps the first four chapters before he goes on to the 11
theses. Cortez does not say this is the only way to look at humanity, but he gives an example of
what he believes with a brief explanation. The chapter continues to go through each thesis in
detail. With this chapter done, the book will move on to some case studies which the first four
chapters and the eleven theses will help me understand.
Strachan: Chapter 3
This chapter goes over work, rest, and entertainment. We as humans were made by God
to work. God gives us an example from the creation story. God worked for six days and rested on
the seventh. When God created Adam, he gave him a job to do. The chapter talks about how
humans have distorted God’s plan to worship Him, work a lot, rest easily, and play some.
Today's world has turned that around and we have started worshiping our entertainment. I
reflected on this chapter on Sunday after church. I looked at my plans for the day and realized
that I was being convicted by God through this. My day did not revolve around God and family,
but instead, I had to get home and change to get ready for football. This chapter was a real wake-
up call for me.
Strachan: Chapter 6
In this chapter, Strachan goes over technology. Man, what an issue this has become for
the world. God created us with one of our biggest needs being relationships. With the technology
out today, it has driven us far away from relationships. Technology was built to help us, but we
have overindulged in it to the point where people are starting to lose the ability to communicate.
One of the biggest problems is how the enemy has made sexual immorality at the fingertips of
everyone with a phone.
Scripture Reading:
From this week’s scripture reading, I see the importance of doing my work not for myself
but, I should act as though it is a service to God. When you go to work with that outlook,
everything seems less hectic. I read the scriptures at the beginning of the week and set out to try
to follow them to the best of my ability for the week. I found myself being more of a servant to
my employees and was nowhere near as stressed as I normally am.
Video: Why Work?
This video calls us to readjust our view of work. Many of us either look at work as a
hindrance where we look at ways to avoid it, or we idolize work and put too much emphasis on
it. But we need to look at God’s purpose for us and work. We do see that through the fall work
will be hard, but we need to do our work as if it is for the Lord.
Questions:
1. What will work look like in Heaven?
2. What can we do to help get rid of the temptation of laziness?
3. How does my work matter to God?
Takeaway:
Whatever we do, we need to do it for the glory of God, and through that we can
reach other people for God.
