Short Reflection Paper
There are many biblical doctrines in Theology and how they describe a specific rule or
code that we follow that allows us to learn and understand God in many ways. Hamartiology is a
Greek term that is used as a definition of “mistake” or “issue”. The term Hamartiology in
theology deals with the idea of sin and the evils we commit because of our desires. Satan used
this a means to destroy us and that it became our downfall before we realized that God sent His
one and only son to die for our sins and rise from the grave. Sin is a problem that has spread
worldwide and continues to affect everyone in a different way. However, I will not be discussing
the impact of sin rather the nature of sin. Sin can be broken down into 4 different areas, and it
also contributes to its foundation in which we can fully understand it’s nature and how it has
affected man for centuries. This issue has been happening for more than one-hundred years till
the present and it has given us time to think about how it is a practical application and how it will
affect life through the church and through our culture.
For us to understand sin, we must take time to have a complete run down of the doctrine
and how we as Christians deal with this type of issue. Sin is the very evils we commit in a daily
basis and for us to understand sin, we must have belief in the spiritual world. If we do not believe
that there is a God who loves us or that His existence is there then we cannot address the very
nature of sin. Without God to be a major evidence in this doctrine that we are defining, then what
is the difference between good and sin? It said by C.S Lewis in Mere Christianity, “Human
beings, all over the earth, have this idea that they should behavior in a certain way, but it is
something we cannot get over or get rid of.” This states that as humans we have a moral standard
that is given to us from a powerful and higher being. Therefore, our priority in our spiritual
beliefs should be in God. The 4 areas in which we overlook in for sin can be defined by Rachel-
Clair Cockrell in “8 Sins that Christians are starting to ignore” which states, “the 4 sins that we
ignore the most are Self-righteousness, Fear/worry, Pride, Hatred.” Each of these sins are both
personal and relatable to all of us because we all act upon each of these sins in some way. We use
Self-righteousness to compliment ourselves in something we should do on a normal basis and we
put on a show or act to let people know we are Christians, we tend to be afraid of other people’s
judgement on us and that we become scared of his will and his amazing power over us all which
can imply a lack of faith. Pride is something we use as an excuse to think we have done nothing
wrong or admit to others of our mistakes, so we tend to think that it is their fault, hatred is our
worst sin that we tend to overlook because we believe that it is okay and with fear being a main
cause of hatred, it causes us to be irrational and act in a non-Christian way.
