From the outside, the Bible is just a regular book. However, on the inside, the Bible is a
story written by forty human authors spanning over two thousand miles in a time span of around
two thousand years. This alone makes this book truly remarkable. Yet, the most astounding thing
about this book is that it is a story written by one true and divine Author, God. The Bible
contains impeccable consistency. Although there are so many writers from different
backgrounds, the Bible is unified in that it points to God’s restoration of Earth. The Bible begins
with God’s creation and then man’s rebellion against the Creator. While man rejected God, He
still extended His grace and mercy to His creation. God sent His son to redeem the world, and
the Bible ends with restoration. This unity of Scripture allows for man today to have a personal
relationship with Christ. The Bible is a book that man can relate to even today. It transcends all
time. The unity and coherence of the Bible can be proven by the very nature of God and the
interdependence of the Old Testament and New Testament.
The nature of God does not change. This aspect of God allows for one to see the unity of
the inspired Word of God. In James 1:17 the author states, “Every good and perfect gift is from
above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change life shifting
shadows” (NIV). This verse shows that the Lord does not change. Although forty authors were
writing about Him, His nature and character stayed constant throughout Scripture. Malachi 3:6
states, “I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed” (NIV).
God inspires this verse so that man can understand that the character of God is consistent
throughout every part of His word. When one can understand the nature of God, he or she can
also understand the relationship of God to His creation. God’s nature is his love, holiness, and
power.1 God wants man to imitate His character. Through God being unified in Scripture, man

can see the proper way to live in close relationship to God. Christians are called to live a life that
brings glory and honor to God. The best way to do this is to show God’s character. The nature of
God allows one to understand who God is on a deeper level. It is through His nature that one can
live a life of salvation and come to know exactly who He is. Man today should aim to live out
the character of God.
The interdependence of the Old and New Testaments provide man with the ability to see
the unity of the Word of God. The book of Micah from the Old Testament plays an important role
in connecting the Old and New Testaments. Micah 5:2 states, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be
ruler over Israel. Whose origins are from of old, from ancient times” (NIV). This prophesy of the
coming of Jesus proves that the Old and New Testament are connected and are both inspired by
God. In the Old Testament, the people of God are anticipating the coming salvation of the
Messiah. In the New Testament, the Messiah’s work is being done and His sacrifice is made.2
Thus, there is a consistent story throughout the Bible. Micah 6:8 also talks about the greatest
commandment which is to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God (NIV). This
command is seen in the New Testament as well. Matthew 22:37 tells one to love the Lord and
love His people (NIV). These two commandments are intertwined and the overlapping of
messages is due to the unity of the Bible. This unity of the Bible allows man to see the story that
leads up to the redemption of His people. Man can relate today by seeing the sacrifice Jesus
made for all His people. Through that sacrifice, God is still able to have an intimate relationship
with His creation.

The Bible is one story written by the divine God. This unity of the Word of God can be
shown through the unwavering nature of God and the interdependence of the Old Testament and
New Testaments. The unified Bible is the way for man to receive the free gift of salvation.
Without this story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration, there would be no way for man
today to accept God’s grace and mercy. The unified Word of God teaches man to live a life after
Christ. It should be the goal of all Christians to model a life around the character of God. While
this is impossible because of man’s sinful nature, it is what God desires for His creation. This can
be accomplished by living in a close relationship with Him. We are able to have this relationship
with Christ because of the cross. Because of this grand story of the Bible, we can be called His
beloved.
