We are All Created in His Image
It is a common core Christian belief that mankind was created in the image of God. This
core belief still holds true today. This core belief, in my opinion, came from Genesis 1:26-27.
The Holy Bible (2011) states, “Then God said, 26 “Let us make mankind in our image, in our
likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock
and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. 27 So God
created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he
created them (New International Version (NIV).” Being that I have made the decision to become
and work as a Christian counselor, this belief must be accepted acknowledged and followed un-
doubtfully.
While working in this career field, I must first be prepared to listen intently, as that is a
major component in helping the individual get to the root of their problem. Secondly, I must
bring forth the truth of scripture to bring light upon the problems that are faced in an individual’s
life, so that they can move forward in the healing process. As a Christian counselor I must
uphold the belief that mankind is created in God’s image, by showing this in my work. By doing
so, I will be glorifying God.
According to the Holy Bible (2011), Proverbs 18:2 states “Fools find no pleasure in
understanding but delight in airing their own opinions (New International Version NIV).” It is

very easy for humans to be too caught up in their own thoughts to be able to pay attention to
someone else’s issues. Or worse, they just want to merely jump to conclusions and give
unwarranted advice. This is done selfishly. In life, one must be a great listener. However, as a
Christian counselor, one must do more than be a great listener. A Christian counselor must
practice empathetic listening skills. This comes from a most loving place. To listen in this
capacity means to listen wholeheartedly, and without passing judgment. This is very hard for
most individuals, however, for a Christian it is our duty to do this in any setting, to include the
counseling session. I can say, that this used to be very hard for me to practice, when I was
working as a life coach, and I realized I was lacking guidance from the Holy Spirit, and I was
ignorant to God’s word. In my opinion, without guidance of the Holy Spirit and true
understanding of God’s word will have any Christian lost in their career field.
As a Christian counselor, I will be faced with individuals who have been through a great
deal of trials and tribulations. Most of them will be lacking in faith, and their faith must be
restored. This is where I, as the Christian counselor, must remind the hurting individual of the
truth in Scripture to help them shed light on their problems so that they can move forward in
their healing process, which includes becoming closer to God. According to the Holy Bible, 2
Corinthians 1:3-4 states, 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can
comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God (New International
Version NIV).” Being that we were all created in his image, as a Christian counselor, it is my
duty to provide comfort to the individual whom is suffering. This can only be done, by using
scripture to remind the individual of God’s promises.

According to Towns (2002) the nature of God is truth; therefore, what God has said
cannot create a breach in His character (pp. 9).” As I have made a point to mention in one of my
discussion forum post, His character is what I believe attracts us to Him. His word is reliable
and tells us what we need to do in order to being good Christians. The truths written in Scripture
can provide guidance in our day-to-day dealings with others as we are working in our chosen
professions. I believe that as a Christian counselor, I can lean on His word and it will aid me in
providing adequate care to my counselees. I want nothing more than to provide an empathetic
ear, and hope through Scripture, so that the hurting individual will be reminded of God’s truth
and how it can be related back to their lives. As always, I believe we can trust in Him and His
word.
