THEO 104-B05
Professor Edgell
Reflection Essay Assignment
Over the course of this theology class, my perspective on theology has evolved
significantly. Initially, I approached theology as an abstract and esoteric field, largely detached
from my daily life. However, as I delved deeper into the subject matter and engaged with the
principles taught, I came to recognize its profound relevance and applicability to my own life and
the lives of those around me.
Evolution of My View of Theology -
As I continued to delve deeper into the course materials and engage in thoughtful
discussions, I began to recognize that theology extends far beyond the boundaries of any single
religious tradition. Initially, my perspective was somewhat narrow, focusing on theology within
the context of my own faith background. However, I soon came to appreciate that theology is a
broad and inclusive discipline that encompasses a multitude of beliefs and spiritual experiences.
One pivotal realization was that theology isn't just about formulating beliefs but also
about questioning and challenging them. It encourages individuals to explore the mysteries of
existence, grapple with doubt, and seek deeper understanding. I started to see theology as a
dynamic process of inquiry rather than a static set of beliefs to be rigidly adhered to.
Moreover, the course emphasized the practical implications of theology on our daily
lives. It became clear that theology influences not only our religious practices but also our moral
compass, our interactions with others, and our contributions to society. This realization led me to
approach theological discussions with a heightened sense of responsibility, recognizing that the
ideas I engage with have real-world consequences.
Additionally, my view of theology evolved to include a greater emphasis on dialogue and
interfaith understanding. I learned that theology could serve as a bridge between individuals of
different faiths, fostering mutual respect and cooperation. This newfound perspective encouraged
me to seek out opportunities for interfaith dialogue and collaboration, recognizing the value of
diverse theological perspectives in enriching my own understanding.
In sum, my view of theology has evolved from a limited, academically focused
perspective to a broader, more dynamic, and inclusive understanding. It has become a lens
through which I explore not only my own beliefs but also the rich tapestry of human spirituality
and its impact on our lives and society. This course has transformed me from a passive observer
to an active participant in the ongoing theological conversation, one that is both deeply personal
and profoundly relevant to the human experience.
Application of Theological Principles in my Life -
One of the most profound shifts I've experienced is the heightened awareness of the
ethical and moral dimensions of my decisions and actions. This newfound awareness extends
beyond the immediate consequences of my choices; it now involves a deeper consideration of
how my actions align with my evolving theological perspective. For instance, when faced with
ethical dilemmas, I find myself pausing to reflect on the values and beliefs that underpin my
decision-making process. This introspection has led to more intentional and values-driven
choices, fostering a greater sense of integrity in my daily life.
The incorporation of theological reflection into my daily routine has become a
transformative practice. Regularly contemplating my beliefs and values has not only deepened
my understanding of them but also revealed their profound influence on my interactions with
others. I've learned to approach conversations and conflicts with a greater sense of empathy and
compassion, recognizing that diverse theological perspectives exist. This newfound empathy has
enabled me to engage in more respectful and open discussions, even with individuals whose
beliefs differ significantly from my own. Additionally, I've become more attuned to societal
issues, understanding that my faith and spirituality call me to take an active role in promoting
justice and compassion in the world.
Furthermore, the skills I've acquired through this course have equipped me to engage in
meaningful theological conversations with friends and family. These discussions now foster an
environment of open and inclusive dialogue about matters of faith and spirituality. Rather than
avoiding potentially sensitive topics, I embrace them as opportunities for growth and mutual
understanding. These conversations have strengthened my relationships, allowing us to navigate
our theological differences with respect and curiosity, ultimately deepening our connections.
In conclusion, the principles I've learned in this course have not only heightened my
awareness of the ethical and moral dimensions of my life but have also enriched my daily
practices through theological reflection. They have empowered me to engage in more meaningful
conversations about matters of faith and spirituality with those around me, fostering a spirit of
openness and inclusivity. These changes have not only affected my personal growth but have
also positively impacted my interactions and relationships within my community.
Passing on Theological Knowledge –
As I conclude this course, I am committed to sharing the knowledge and insights I have
gained with those in my circle of influence. I believe that theology has the power to promote
understanding and tolerance among individuals with diverse beliefs. To pass on this information
effectively, I plan to:
Facilitate Discussions: I will organize informal gatherings and discussion groups where
people can explore theological topics in a comfortable and non-judgmental environment.
Blog & Social Media: I will utilize digital platforms to share thought-provoking articles,
quotes, and reflections on theology and its relevance to contemporary issues, inviting
others to engage in meaningful conversations.
Personal Conversations: I will engage in one-on-one discussions with friends and family,
encouraging them to think critically about their own theological beliefs and fostering at
atmosphere of mutual respect.
In addition to the methods mentioned above, I also intend to explore additional avenues to
disseminate theological understanding within my community:
Workshops and Seminars: I plan to organize workshops and seminars focused on specific
theological themes or contemporary issues that intersect with theology. These events will
provide a structured environment for participants to delve deeper into theological
discussions, fostering critical thinking and a deeper understanding of theological
concepts.
Reading Groups: Establishing theology-focused reading groups can be an effective way
to encourage ongoing exploration and dialogue. By selecting relevant books and texts,
these groups can provide a structured framework for individuals to engage with
theological ideas and share their perspectives.
Interfaith Initiatives: I recognize the value of interfaith dialogue in promoting
understanding and tolerance among people of diverse beliefs. I aim to actively participate
in interfaith initiatives and encourage others in my community to do the same. This will
create opportunities for individuals to learn from different faith traditions and engage in
respectful discussions.
In conclusion, this course has transformed my view of theology from a distant academic
pursuit to a deeply personal and applicable field. The principles I have learned have influenced
my life choices and interactions, and I am committed to passing on this knowledge to promote a
more inclusive and empathetic dialogue about theology within my community.
