Thinking Critically: Radio, TV, and Video Game Assignment
1. Are you a cable subscriber or have you “cut the cord?” What motivated your decision?
Do you prefer a la carte pricing? If you have cut the cord, how do you view your news and
entertainment?
I barely ever watch cable. I prefer streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV,
etc. Cable becomes very irritating because no matter what, there are always commercials to
watch or skip through, or something about the news is brought up. With the direction that
technology is going in, more people are turning away from cable and are subscribing to
streaming platforms (Baran, et al., 2022, p. 199). I find these platforms to be more convenient,
and more entertaining.
The place that I see most news is on social media. News spreads like wildfire, and so I'm
always up to date on the latest and am always up to date. One of my favorite things to do is
watch movies or TV shows, however, there are a great number of unpleasant films out there that
I come across while searching for something to watch.
When this occurs, I think back to this one verse, 1 Corinthians 15:33, “do not be
deceived: ‘bad company corrupts good morals’” (NIV, 2011). It is a great reminder of the sin in
this world and that the bad company from those specific films can tempt you to stray from your
good morals, which pull you away from God. It's easy to be deceived in this fallen world that we
live in. That is why it's important to cling to God and His word, because His word is truth, and
will keep us on the right path.

6. Are you an active social media user? If so, how accurate of a representation of yourself
do you tend to present? Do you show the “real you” because that’s what you want to do, or
do you feel restricted in your presentation of yourself by the presence of your online
friends? Likewise, have you ever shared your Christian faith or made a post about
controversial issues? How have you been received?
I am an active social media user. I don’t post or participate too much on my feeds, but I
do enjoy posting exciting news on my stories, pictures of nature, friends, or family. Social media
can be very deceiving and lower one’s self-esteem given what is soon on places such as
Instagram. Lots of people post what they feel that others want to see, and that used to be me.
However, I decided to use my social media platform to spread God’s goodness, even in the little
things.
It wasn't until 2020 after the pandemic hit that I became vocable with how I felt about
controversial issues. I felt God pulling me to speak up and use my platforms for good.
Unfortunately, I lost a lot of friends and followers because I felt differently than them. It hurt in
the beginning, but I took it as a sign that God was weeding out those who weren’t meant to be in
my life forever. The world hates God, and so that also means that the world hates those who love
God. This was what I experienced for a while.
In John 15:18, Jesus said, “if the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first”
(NIV). This is a good reminder that Jesus walked this earth before us and wasn’t liked by many.
We focus so much on being liked, that we forgot what’s most important—we are God’s children,
and He loves us the most.

Radio has drastically changed over the years. In a video, James Cridland, the Radio
Futurologist, claims podcasts are part of radio. Do you agree? Why or why not?
Furthermore, what are your listening habits? Radio, podcasts, or streaming platforms?
How are you personally affected by the changing new media platforms?
I agree that podcasts are a form of radio because you can stream it just like any radio
station. There are radio stations that have talk shows, just like podcasts. Like James Cridland
said, “radio doesn’t just come out of radio anymore, it comes out of many other things as well”
(Live vs On Demand with James Cridland, the Radio Futurologist). Radio could be anything
from an iPhone to an MP3 player.
I enjoy listening to Spotify and creating playlists for different moods. I prefer this to the
radio because I can pay for a subscription so that I have all my music in the same place, along
with not having to listen to commercials. I also enjoy using Spotify to listen to podcasts done by
The Porch. This is my favorite thing to do on long drives!
I find that various media platforms are necessary because everyone has their own
preference. I must admit, it’s hard to keep up with what’s new and trending, because I already
feel a bit overwhelmed with all the choices that we already have. In Ephesians 5:11 it states,
“have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” (NIV).
Although we’ve been given the freedom and the ability to have multiple platforms of media, we
must not fall into the trap of darkness that is brought with them. God wants us to remain in Him
and to expose the evil in this world that is being spread and indoctrinated in every platform.
