Discussion Thread Assignment: Public Relations, Advertising and the Internet
After viewing the videos and reading the chapters in this assignment, discuss the following
questions.
1. What is the difference between public relations and advertising?
Although public relations and advertising seem very similar to me, the differences of each
are as follows; in my own words from my prior knowledge and information gained from the
textbook:
Public relations focus more so on the public image of whatever company is at hand. It also
congregates non-paid attention. They tend to concoct official statements of those in
positions of power in the company.
Advertising is, of course, the conception and distribution of ads. It is paid media
placement. This could consist of commercials broadcasted on television, billboards,
or even those pop-up advertisements that we all see from time to time on
websites/social media platforms.
2. Why are we seeing so many ads in so many new and different places? Do you often wonder
why products or services you have recently searched for online show up as advertisements in
your news feed? How is that happening?

Personally, I have a feeling that social media platforms monitor what we say and do
amongst our cellular devices. Think about it, if you talk about something random, for
instance, such as kitty litter, I guarantee that within the hour, your social media platforms
will begin to show adds of kitty litter. This is a topic that interests me so much so that I
have chosen it for my research paper.
3. How do you see the future of shopping changing as a result of the Internet? Consider
everything from products from around the world to getting your groceries or your pet
supplies.
As someone who has worked in the upscale retail industry for many years, I can attest to
the possibility of cyber shopping monopolizing the entirety of shopping malls as a
whole. While this could be a good thing, it could have its bad effects too. From my basic
knowledge of having worked in this field for many years, if we were to close all
shopping malls and public stores, then there would be less jobs for everyone in the
commission world to have. However, I say this with uncertainty since online shopping
access only to all could create more warehouse jobs at higher wages, per say. However,
this would leave many, like myself now as I complete my journey to law school and/or
corporate America via finishing my degree, difficult.
