Teachers have been a significant influence in my life as far as I can
remember. That is because teachers act as substitute parents as well as
educators. An example of excellent teaching behavior I have experienced
occurred when I was in the sixth grade. My parents were going through a
divorce, and I was living with my grandmother. The emotional chaos
caused my grades to drop. So, my teacher pulled me aside one day,
inquired about my life, and decided to give me some extra lessons and
homework to catch up on, as well as therapeutic advice that helped me
through those trying times.#
An example of poor teaching behavior I experienced occurred while
working on my master’s in social work. I was working on a group
assignment two years ago when one of the group members got COVID
and could not contribute to the group as needed. The professor was
notified by the group member and other members in the group. Although
group members helped complete the assignment, the professor
penalized#the group for not doing an excellent job. Additionally, the
professor gave the group member a zero for not participating in the group
assignment.#
#The first example relates to the Principles of Effective Teaching discussed
in chapter one of Berstein et al. (2020), encouraging student-faculty
contact. Student contact inside and outside of the classroom is essential.
Educators should try to make learning personal and tailor the classroom
experience toward existential learning, not towards the regurgitation of
information. Encouraging student-faculty contact enhances the learning
process. Students who know their teacher's ability to care about them
perform better inside and outside an education setting (Berstein et al.,
2020).#
The second example relates to the Principles of Effective Teaching
discussed in chapter one of Berstein et al. (2020) is Communicate High
Expectations. Although the second example used had a negative outcome
for the group. The professor did not have high expectations#regarding
group performance. This was evident in the educator's lack of motivation
and enthusiasm to be flexible and understanding.#
The teacher could have encouraged the group to complete the
assignment instead of showing the weaker side of the group in the
negative experience example. Encouraging students would have
enhanced the group experience to include Respecting#Diverse Talents and
Ways of Learning. One of the seven principles of effective learning.
However, the instructor could have used the group member's adversity as
an advantage to illustrate how instrumental learning can be effective in
the early stages of the COVID epidemic.#
Leiber (2020) believed that educators should approach the quality of
learning and teaching in higher education holistically via four domains.
The learning and teaching environment domains, teaching methods,
learning strategies, and assessments.#The Lord has blessed each of us
with unique gifts. These gifts allow the Lord to use us to edify his word.
The word says, “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in
serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”
(King James Version, 2022, 1 Peter 4:10).
Much of my education was conducted online. However, the pace and
format are different from traditional classroom-led instructional learning.
How effective is modular learning in our high-tech world? Is it effective at
all as a type of learning?
